Since Bostonist has this week off (thank you, April vacation), we decided to explore outside the city limits in a little place called Watertown. With a list of recommendations from a friend, Bostonist has been out exploring all that Watertown has to offer--like cheaper rents, great restaurants, and convenient location. Bordering Brighton and Cambridge, Watertown is close to the city, without all the crime, crazy people, ineffective local government, etc. that comes with living in those places. Today Bostonist strolled over to Coolidge Square to check out Cosmo's Ice Cream and Cupcakes, a great new addition to the already stellar offerings in that area. Bostonist initially cringed when asked to pay $2 for a cupcake, but it was totally worth it.

resource when you're looking to go the miserly route. We were reminded of this last Friday when we had a chance to see one of Berklee's many great jazz ensembles for the lovely price of $0. That sparked our curiosity. so we wandered over to the Berklee site to see what else they have going on this week. Question: How many free live music events can one college offer in a day? Answer: Eleven. Bostonist was particularly interested in the "Music of Bob Marley" concert this afternoon. Dear Diary: Jackpot.
Camille Paglia speaks at the Brattle, in Cambridge, tonight at 6 p.m. Free tickets are available at the Harvard Book Store.
dredge the campus pond. Don't get us wrong--we return our empties to the packie religiously. But like many Americans, we just never felt the immediacy of resource depletion--until now. Today Bostonist shelled out a whopping $2.19 per gallon at a gas station in Hyde Park. As if that wasn't bad enough, we turned on the radio after that and heard that gas prices are projected to be at an average of $2.35 this summer. Worst of all, Bostonist's daily commute is 30 miles round trip. Guess that "student for change" was right when he said that we'd live to regret this.
Bostonist couldn't help but notice the difference in Bostonian attitudes today. Suddenly everyone decided to stop doing that whole keeping-their-eyes-trained-at-the-ground-and-muttering-swears thing. Naturally, we attributed this to the weather, seeing as we finally felt comfortable crawling out of our dank winter hidey-holes (spider holes?) today. You know spring has arrived in New England when the kids start doing scooter tricks in Copley again. It's actually really nice to see people (and birds) out and about, although Bostonist saw an alarming amount of folks wearing shorts, and they weren't jogging. Who says we're clinging fast to our Puritanical ways? Some nice spring-y places that Bostonist considered checking out today but couldn't because we can't stop keeping our eyes trained at the ground and muttering swears: The Arboretum, the Charles River Basin, and the Harvard Square Au Bon Pain.
Bostonist has ties to one of the Boston Public Schools and two students at that school have been murdered so far this year. It's been really hard for both students and teachers to deal with. Although Boston Public has made efforts to help the students cope, feelings of hopelessness and doubt abound. Reading this this morning, Bostonist was struck by the comments of the latest victim's sister. We hope that today's meeting and subsequent meetings effect some real change in the city.
Bostonist is torn on this one. A public law school would be a great addition to the state, especially for those who don't have the cash for Suffolk, BC,or BU (don't even get us started about Harvard). We have a public medical school which is consistently ranked as one of the top 20 medical schools in the country. But the University of Massachusetts system is in big financial trouble as it is, and a new school would be a lot to handle for an already strained institution. What are your thoughts?
If you're not too busy today on Good Friday (or celebrating your day off), KRS One is at the Middle East tonight. Considered one of the elder statesmen of hip-hop, KRS One is also known as a progressive activist and a vociferous critic of today's hip-hop. Luckily for us, he's stepping back into his original role as an amazing MC tonight, promoting his newest album, "Keep Right" with special guests 7L & Esoteric and Project Move joining him on stage. Bostonist missed the chance to see KRS in college and spent the night outside the club listening to him scream "Bring all the B-Boys up to the stage!" We won't make the same mistake twice.
