Ben Affleck is by no means the savior of the city for making a movie all about Boston. It's just a movie, after all. But some recent harsh criticism from Slate surprised us. Dorchester native Patrick Radden Keefe notes the abundance of aesthetically challenged individuals in the movie and declares, "The result is not so much what [Scorcese's] Mean Streets did for New York as what Deliverance did for Appalachia." Cue the umbrage. Did he...

You may not have noticed since they've been largely under the radar, but the Boston Film Festival starts this weekend at the AMC Loews Boston Common, and they have some good movies. The Boston Film Festival website has the full schedule, and Bostonist has pulled out some highlights: Lars and the Real Girl, Saturday, September 15, 7:30-9:30 Have you ever wondered what might happen if a fella bought a blow-up doll and actually fell in...

We saw so much of Denzel Washington in the local press recently that we're feeling a little left out, even more so since he's probably left town by now. Boston media was so Denzel-happy that we half expected someone to run a post saying, "I threw my panties at Denzel!" It's like Denzel Washington was here, there, and everywhere in Boston. Washington was in town for the shooting of The Great Debaters, about a 1930s...

On this day a mere 131 years ago, Alexander Graham Bell received the patent for the telephone and Ma Bell was on her way to being born. Bell submitted his patent for the telephone at 11:30 a.m. February 14, only hours after Elisha Gray submitted a caveat for the device – but Gray didn't convert his caveat into a full blown application for patent, so the patent office granted the patent to Bell. It's a whole contentious story that could probably be researched for a decade before yet another book was written on the subject, but the long and the short of it was that Bell got the patent for the phone and a system of overtaxing citizens began.

After a sparse, lackadaisical August, the fall semester has arrived with a frenzied syllabus of film screenings: a slew of new documentaries, our favorite Terry Gilliam movies, a notoriously disorganized film festival, and a guest lecture from Bruce Campbell, chainsaw-wielder emeritus. Thursday 9/7 Four Eyed Monsters Two pale, artsy Brooklynites met through online personals, maxed out seven credit cards to make a movie about it, moved back in with their parents in Massachusetts, and made...

Who needs advance reviews when this Bostonist's got an excuse to wear her vintage stewardess uniform to the theater? Thursday 8/17 Snakes On A Plane Jon Stewart: What's the plot? Samuel L. Jackson: Uhhh... Bad guy wants to bring down the plane... Stewart: What's on the plane? Jackson: Victims. Stewart: No no no no. Jackson: Reptiles? Stewart: Yes! Jackson: Poisonous reptiles! Stewart: Yes! Jackson: Snakes on a mother***ing plane! Stewart: They wanted to make it...

In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. Thursday 8/3 Stolen One of the things that endears the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to us (along with the dim lighting, strict ban on electronic devices, and terse signage) is how the frames of missing paintings hang empty on the walls. (As per Mrs. Gardner's...

In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. Friday 7/14 They Came Back (Les Revenants) The dead return by the thousands, but they're the French dead: their hunger is existential. (American and Italian zombies, with traditional brain-eating values, will return next weekend.) Museum of Fine Arts, Remis Auditorium 6 pm, $10 They Came...

In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. Opening Friday 7/7 A Scanner Darkly Waking Life Bostonist is crossing her fingers that Richard Linklater's well-cast and lovingly-animated Philip K. Dick adaptation will strike the right tone of near-future uneasiness (like Bladerunner did) and eschew chase scenes and tacked-on Hollywood endings (like Total Recall...

Wednesday kicks off the 4th annual Boston International Film Festival (BIFF). BIFF offers 8 consecutive days of 110 films from over 27 countries with movie genres ranging from animation to comedy to political documentary. All films are being screened at AMC Loews Theatre Boston Common with additional screenings at Mass Art. The BIFF was created to spotlight independently produced films all across the world on stages here in the Hub. A juried festival of...

The news of a massive movie house merger got Bostonist all worked up. Where will we go? How much will we pay? We’re already paying $15 to go see a movie at the MFA on opening night, and the Loews Boston Common gets close with their $10.25 weekend admission. The announcement today that AMC plans to acquire the Loews Cineplex theatres reminded us of when Shaw's and Star merged. Bostonist can’t really tell the theatres apart when we’re inside. It’s dark, the seats sit on an impressive rake, the sound is loud. Same with Shaws and Star, except they're well lit and flat floors. No word yet on potential name changes to the Loews and AMC complex, perhaps AMC will leave a couple Loews just to make us feel comfortable.

Bostonist spent all our money this weekend when we hit the newish Cold Stone store at the Fenway AMC and then caught a "The Interpreter" for an evening show. Incidentally, the ice cream was much more satisfying. Today a press release hit the wire announcing the increasingly ubiquitous gourmet ice cream chain’s plans for expansion. What grabbed our attention was not that they were going to be adding stores in and around Boson, not that there were going to be 40 more opened in Massachusetts within five years, but that we could own one of our very own. Then we'd get all the free ice cream we wanted.
