Beachgoers, State Trooper Matthew Waples, and Hull/Hingham animal control officer Leslie Badger saved a 14-year old silky terrier named Foxy from drowning, believe it or not, at the hands of her owner. Barbara O’Driscoll, 60, of Cohasset, allegedly dragged the 12-pound pooch into the water at Nantasket Beach in Hull. Witnesses alerted Trooper Waples who brought the animal control officer in to care for Foxy. Waples said O’Driscoll said "It's just a dog." Badger performed CPR and "mouth-to-snout" resuscitation en route to the VCA South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. Foxy is still being treated there with oxygen therapy, IV fluids and antibiotics. O’Driscoll pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty, disorderly conduct and violating a ban on dogs at Hingham District Court on Wednesday. She allegedly admitted to drinking several glasses of wine. Certain things seem obvious, so obvious that it goes unsaid that they shouldn't be done. At least one Rhode Island man failed to read the memo that explained it's a dumb friggin' idea to perform surgery on your own dog to treat a cyst. The gang at the Rhode Show - think Fox & Friends in a trailer park instead of a modern TV studio - seemed more worried about the financial ramifications of playing Operation on Fido than the idea of an untrained person treating a sick animal. The owner/surgeon said he couldn't afford a veterinarian for the patient/victim, a 14-year old lab named Nakita. The owner pleaded no contest to animal cruelty charges last week. more ›

--Yesterday, a guy in the North End gave police a 30-inch-long baby boa constrictor inside a Crown Royal bag. We're not sure if toting a snake in a Crown Royal bag is animal cruelty or public disturbance or what. It's definitely weird and kind of cool. The unnamed man said he "found it on the street." The bag was also wet, and the Herald didn't know why. One can only guess. The optimistic answer would... more ›

Just over a week ago the Globe brought us the discouraging story that Mitt Romeny used to take the Romney family vacations with their pet strapped atop the family station wagon back in the 80's. The tales of flip-flopping positions on contentious political issues haven't grabbed the spotlight quite as well as poor treatment of the family dog. Politicians have been famous for their pets, Nixon had Checkers and Clinton had Socks and a whole... more ›

Bostonist has a bit of an obsession with the McCloskey story Make Way for Ducklings and was happy to see the ducklings waddling along Beacon Hill for Mother’s Day. Other news this weekend was also foul, from the scuffle at Faneuil Hall to the real goosestomper in Attelboro. Bostonist is all for free speech, but we can’t stand animal cruelty. The Boston Globe reported in an absurd juxtoposition this morning that a Rhode Island man who stomped to death five baby Canada Geese and injured their mother to an extent that she was later euthanized. more ›
