In surprising news, not having sprinklers can put you at fire risk. Early this morning, a father and his two children perished in a fire in their basement apartment in Quincy. The apartment had apparently been an illegal addition to a four-family home that was not required to have sprinklers. If the additional units had been declared, the building would have been required to have sprinklers. Other residents asserted that smoke detectors were present in their units, but were not working. Officials have not confirmed the functioning of the smoke detectors. The landlords had no comment. The Red Cross is providing aid to families displaced by this potentially preventable fire. more ›

Today, an ad appeared on Craigslist for a two bedroom Mission Hill apartment priced at the bargain basement rent of $1,300, available for no fee. Too good to be true, right? It turns out that along with a parking space and "2 HUGE storage closets," the apartment comes complete with the chalk outline of a human body. Speculation on this Reddit thread has the apartment being the one involved in the May murder of a Northeastern student in the Parker Hill Apartments. But the building described in the Craigslist ad is a three unit condo, not a massive apartment complex. Was the unit a crime scene?
