Bite Size News, October 23: Obama Was Here Edition

  • President Obama's trip to Boston is in the books. He discussed energy policy at MIT, visited a wind-testing facility in Charlestown that received federal stimulus funds, and attended a fundraiser for Gov. Deval Patrick. [Boston Herald]
  • George Chmiel, 28, of Charlestown is competing in a seven-day, 150-mile foot race through the Sahara Desert. Chmiel reportedly said "It’s totally insane yet at the same time it makes a bunch of sense." Better him than Bostonist. Good luck, though. Really. [Boston Globe]

Turning the Tables on Health Care Nazi Baiters

The woman Barney Frank famously compared to a dining room table at a health care forum in Dartmouth over the summer is back in circulation and she brought her Lyndon LaRouche loving, President Obama hating, health care reform opposition with her. The woman, apparently named Rachel Brown, appeared at the North Attleboro Post Office on Friday with another person and a picture of President Obama with an Adolf Hitler type of moustache. Brown and her cohort reportedly asked people "What do you think of his moustache?, " as they walked by.

Hate Crime Story Gets National Interest

The phrase "I Swastika Obama" that was carved into the 18th green at the Lakeville Country Club on Monday may have been covered from view by a cardboard heart, however, the incident has the attention of the Secret Service and the FBI, not to mention the media. Club officials estimate repairing the damage at $1,000. No suspect is known yet. Gawker.com explains how the vandals may be both ignorant and stupid. AOL Fanhouse brought the hateful story to sportsfans everywhere. New York Magazine reviewed a few recent incidents, including one featuring Massachusetts Congressmen Barney Frank, involving Nazi imagery, and suggested the reaction was relatively muted.

  • Jay Leno Show: Massachusetts Edition

Jay Leno got his inner Hubness on last night on his self-named show with Jennifer Garner and Barney Frank. Garner was on plugging her new film with Ricky Gervais, The Invention of Lying. Frank was on being, well, himself.

"They conveniently ignore that from 1995 until 2007, I was a member of the minority of the House. I am flattered that during that period, when Newt Gingrich and Tom Delay ran the House, some think I had some form of secret power over them, which is nonsense." -- Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank, in a newsletter to constituents, responding to right-wing talk radio charges that he had a hand in the 2008 financial meltdown.

Barney Frank Knows How To Handle Nuts

The national insanity over health care town hall meetings came to Dartmouth last night, and Congressman Barney Frank created an Internet sensation when he verbally smacked down a question comparing health care reform to Naziism.

Barney Frank Offers Polite Disagreement With Pres. Obama

Barney Frank is fearless when it comes to giving his opinion. He was pro-universal healthcare back in Marchand hasn't changed his mind. He also takes no crap from Bill O'Reilly.

Not only is Congressman Barney Frank committed to converting America to the gay agenda, he wants to promote marijuana use, gambling, the rock and roll lifestyle, "economic fascism" and, possibly, witchcraft, head shrinking and esperanto. The website RightSideNews.com exists and believes Frank to be a "moral anarchist" - no, that really is a quote - mainly because he not only supports eliminating federal penalties for possession of "small amounts" of marijuana but also wants to legalize the use of marijuana for - gasp - medicinal purposes.

Bite Size News, June 19: How Taxes Are Spent Edition

Congressmen John Tierney and Barney Frank like to travel and love that we pay for it.[Boston Herald]

Congressman Barney Frank made a lot of news this week. He has been a human talking point on all things economy, bailout and healthcare.

The rainbow-colored umbrage taken over Rick Warren's appearance at Obama's inauguration was starting to die down—until today, when the New York Times' Frank Rich (he of the previously Obama-adoring columns) came down hard on Obama's seeming naivete over this decision, and Obama spokesman David Axlerod appeared on Meet the Press to discuss it with David Gregory, the new host of the venerable political program. This high-profile coverage of what many liberals see as Obama's first major blunder effectively ripped the scab from the wound left by the passing of Prop 8 and Warren's much-publicized comments comparing gay marriage to pedophilia and polygamy. After the jump, we give you a total of eight aspects of an issue which has touched the life of many a Mass. activist. If you're a real politics junkie, you can spend your New Year's Eve figuring out many more.

  • The Globe releases a survey of top workplaces in the state. Bostonist is overlooked again! [Boston Globe]
  • Most of the time, we think of Barney Frank as 'Ol Stodgy or Mr. Party Pooper. He certainly doesn't like Stephen Colbert's brand of comedy, and he gets wicked testy if you ask him why his arm is in a sling.*

LAist is experimenting with blogging dates from J-Date, but finds the best men are found offline. Some date vicariously online and that is one reason why porn is big -- really freaking big -- so they ask if they should cover XXX since the heart of it lays in the city's San Fernando Valley. A writer grapples with her food porn photography obsession, another gets censored on Flickr, one gets scooped by the LA...

Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank is wearing a sling. And, according to Wonkette, he sent an e-mail to Congressional offices announcing that he doesn't want anyone nosing into how he wound up in that sling.

Like most people, we start to get a little sleepy when politicians start talking. We tend to doze off completely when politicians start talking about their books. And we just pass out cold when politicians start talking about a book that has "America" in the title. So we really can't recall much of what Ted Kennedy had to say about his book "America: Back on Track" last night on "The Daily Show". Usually we skip...

This afternoon Al Franken rocked Air America’s AM airwaves* from right here in the Hub. As part of a nation-wide book tour Franken made his appearance in Boston and coupled it with a broadcast of his three hour program from the Wilbur in the Theatre District. Harvard alum Franken pulled on the alumni network to fill his show's time slot. Robert Putnam from the Kennedy School of Government, Laurence Tribe from Harvard Law School, Julius Richmond and Rashi Fein form Harvard Medical School, Atul Gawande from the Harvard School of Public Health joined Franken and Harvard College and Harvard Law School grad and current Congressman Barney Frank for conversations. Boston, "a seat of academic, political and cultural liberalism in America,” according to Senator Santorum, was home to the progressive talk show and a half dozen of those liberal elites from that little school across the river, Harvard. Franken’s “zero spin zone” conversed with some intelligentsia before Franken hopped the red line into his hired car service on his way back up to Cambridge where he read from his new book The Truth (with jokes) at the Charles Hotel in – wait for it – Harvard Square. Bostonist doesn’t really have a problem having that prestigious University across the river, but it seems like Franken focused a bit too much “in the community” and overlooked some of the gems that Boston has to offer. Just think what he could have done with Mitt on the radio. It was nice to have you back in the Hub, Al, even if you were just promoting Ve Ri Tas (with jokes).

Have you ever walked down Boylston and seen weird people with funny accents and large tote bags? These people from all over the country come to the Hynes Convention Center to pay large sums of money and hear important people talk. Nothing upsets Bostonist more than an event too expensive to attend, and for once we have found a different solution than charging the guards at the front gates. AIGA has decided to podcast all of their main stage content in addition to a number of back stage interviews.

Just before Bostonist’s lunch break ended on June 27th an email popped into our inbox with the subject line "Santorum Blames Boston For The Catholic Priest Sex Scandal." Bostonist got all excited that we might be in the loop on some big, breaking story. The email we got linked out to the CapitolBuzz blog referencing a June 25 column in the Philadelphia Daily News. We read the article and actually, Santorum’s "blame" was laid in a 2002 article to Catholic Online. So we flagged the email, kept it in the inbox, and waited.
