There's something very summery about barbeque, but when the weather is so hot and humid, the last thing you want to be doing is tending the grill or the smoker. That's where SoulFire in Allston comes along.

Okay, okay, we gave the Somerville Journal a little heat for a boring blotter headline, but they definitely have our attention with the following: "Witness Says Knife Suspect Was Eating a Chicken Leg With Sauce."
--Some hot dogs are just too hot to handle, at least in Franklin. Two women, Stacey Bower and Sonjalea Katz, were selling "hottie dogs," and the town commissioner stopped it because they didn't have the right permit. The Milford Daily News has a picture of Katz and Bower. Their food van is indeed named "hottie dogs," and they are wearing tank tops, but we can't for the life of us understand what is so threatening...
Trailer Treats will be tonight, July 19, at the Brattle Theatre. Doors open at 7:00 pm, and tickets are $12. Brattle Trailer Treats Night sounds an awful lot like a night out at the drive-in, except it's indoors. But it's all the outdoor fun you can stand under a roof! The Brattle Theatre will be showing nothing but movie trailers tonight, so you can witness the best, juiciest moments about a bad movie without having...
Usually we're bringing you the Mitt Watch on this little corner of the internet. Today we're watching Mitt in his new ad for Mitt Watch. We're still too many months away before actual voting in the 2008 election cycle begins to start putting any faith in poll numbers. Political ads generally tend to bore us, but since it's time to start planning the Fourth of July BBQ patriotism may have taken over – for 24...
Something special happens when you turn 21. You can go out by yourself and pick up a six pack without awkwardly searching for excuses as to why you don't have your ID with you. What happens when a brewery turns 21? They have an even bigger party than you did on your 21st. This year Harpoon Brewery is turning 21 and the annual Brewstock festival will be part of the celebration. Big top tents...
LAist is experimenting with blogging dates from J-Date, but finds the best men are found offline. Some date vicariously online and that is one reason why porn is big -- really freaking big -- so they ask if they should cover XXX since the heart of it lays in the city's San Fernando Valley. A writer grapples with her food porn photography obsession, another gets censored on Flickr, one gets scooped by the LA...
Exploit Boston has toyed with the format of Game Night they began collecting games to play. It was in Ball Square for a little while, The Paradise Lounge on occasion, then camped out at Common Ground in Allston for a while. But the Common Ground just didn't seem to be the right fit for Game Night. So Sooz ventured out down Harvard Ave and found a new soul for the more-or-less monthly get together. Tonight the games will be played at Soul Fire at 182 Harvard Ave in Allston (b-line and 66 bus accessible) for the second month in a row (and it could be the new home). Last month was a full house in the new venue.
Even as the stores sport back to school sales (which depress us, even now), summer lingers on your friends the -ists. This week's collection of links provides some of the best, worst, and oddest bits of summer fun. So, bring your laptop up onto the roof, make yourself an umbrella drink or ten, and enjoy this week's choice posts from across the Gothamist network. Torontoist (where it's 75 degrees F as of this writing)...
Gearing up for July 4th festivities reminds us a bit of what it was like being a kid. The spectacular event that is the fireworks display has always been something Bostonist looks forward to every year. So maybe we're getting a little nostalgic for the backyard BBQ, sparklers and snakes, and slip and slides. And Summer Camp. But sometimes it rained; we couldn't go outside and play. Those times called for a little bit of the Movie Loft on TV 38. As the slow march back to an independent station begins for UPN 38 we find YouTube is now playing host to someone's old recording of Dana Hersey in his off-beat reporting show "We Don't Knock." Not only will today's video make you miss the good old days of TV 38, fashionable blue leather jackets, and big bangs, you may even miss the Rat and what was pre- Hotel Commonwealth Kenmore Square. When UPN 38 goes back to an independent we're crossing our fingers for two things: They bring Sox games back over-air, at least now and again, and that the Dana Hersey will start co-hosting the Phantom Gourmet.
You don’t need to book a flight to California for a Sideways-style adventure the moment you start to feel your mid- (or more quarter-) life crises creeping up. Recently, Bostonist was delightfully surprised to learn there are over a dozen wineries (with actual vineyards!) right in Boston’s backyard.
Located a the intersection of Symphony Hall and BU’s Huntington Theater, it’s a mystery why, on a recent Friday night, Betty’s Wok and Noodles was nearly empty. Could it be that the “Bernstein on Broadway” series is putting the population off their dinner? Do thespians dislike fusion cuisine? No immediate answers present themselves, but nevertheless the truth remains: empty restaurant + Friday night = bad sign.
Though Daedalus, in Greek mythology, was the craftsman who fashioned Icarus’ wings, the name here seems to be an oblique reference to a James Joyce character of the same name. The split-level restaurant has three distinct areas for eating and drinking: the first-floor bar features large windows that open to the air, weather permitting, which makes a relaxing atmosphere for a casual glass of wine. The downstairs dining room, while small, is cozily decorated with a single fresh rose at every table. Venturing upstairs, the diner finds yet another bar and seating area as well as a view of the sky – Daedalus was built inside an old greenhouse, and the ambiance is fantastic.
WBOS' EarthFest played host to upwards of 100,000 people yesterday – with nearly 7,000 of them waiting in line not for music, but to turn in their losing scratch tickets. The Herald reports on a bad experience had by one man trying to redeem 60,000 losing instant win tickets, while the Globe reports a win for recycling on the day as The Lottery reclaimed 50 tons of paper. For every 25 losing tickets returned a $1 scratch ticket was issued.
Bostonist is always glad to welcome a new sibling to the family. We’re settling into our role as a middle child. We don’t horde the toys and we’ve stopped throwing the tantrums we once needed for attention. Jim Parsons, heading up the new site in Houston, has asked us to curb the mission control jokes and puns—but we just can’t help ourselves.
If you’re an astute reader of the postings here you’ll know that Bostonist packed up our things and moved to the other side of the tracks back in September. After a good bit of time living in Egleston Square our landlord decided to sell our triple-decker apartment building as affordable condos. They were priced affordably by Boston standards, not, unfortunately, by Bostonist standards. While living there we told our mother we were living in Jamaica Plain, we told her to address letters there but make sure to use the zip code 02119. We knew, as the USPS knew, 02119 really meant Roxbury. Before we left our little neighborhood with Dominican flavor we were sitting out on our neighbor’s deck enjoying a nice summer BBQ one evening, just as dusk was turning to night. We heard some gun shots. A 14 year old and 17 year old had been non-fatally shot, one was the target the other was apparently recipient of stray retaliation fire. Incidents like this didn't prompt our departure, rather it was the 1-hour commute and the notice of impending sale.
Bostonist will readily admit that we’re a sucker for a throwback. Better yet when the throwback is coupled with a sweet deal. All this week the East Coast Grill in Inman Square is celebrating their 20th anniversary, or Birthday Party, as they like to call it. Bostonist has been contemplating the East Coast Grill as destination dining for a while. We’ve heard such good things generally coupled with a mention about the prices. Really, anyone know of a place with “and Raw Bar” in the name that doesn’t also have a couple of $s following it?
It’s still sweater weather. Damn it. Bostonist refuses to bust out the jacket and scarf quite yet. We’re hoping that the rest of Boston will join us in the no bundling crusade. Smothered with your muffle it’s harder for Bostonist and our compadres to overhear those great comments you’ve been making. Before it gets too cold outside we’d like to remind you--when you hear something say something. Drop Bostonist a line: bostonistoveheard @ gmail.com...
Those of you who are worried about your girlish figures but want to eat french fries and the like need to head over to b.good, the Back Bay restaurant with the tagline: "real.food.fast." Located on Dartmouth Street right past the Back Bay station, b.Good is fast food for the calorie-conscious, and is one of Bostonist's favorite lunchtime spots. All of the menu items are up on a board, which lists the nutritional value of everything. While the idea of fat grams listed next to an order of fries doesn't sound too appealing, the information isn't too scary since all food is basically healthy. (Those french fries, by the way, are baked and only have four grams of fat.) You can have your burger (lean 93% ground beef, turkey or veggie), fries, and shake (made with non-fat frozen-yogurt and skim milk) and not feel like an elephant as you stumble your way back to your cubicle for the afternoon.
Bostonist got a thirst for a cold one at 8 a.m. this morning, the article on cans vs. bottles in the Boston Globe didn’t help. Though they mentioned Jim Koch's "Beer Drinkers' Bill of Rights," they failed to mention that Sam Adams only uses bottles but they claim to only use pop tops, no screw off caps (Bostonist swears we’ve had a screw off Sam before). After a slow go at the rest of the Boston Globe this morning with other headlines like "Filene’s Brand Will be Gone," we’ve known that for months, and "Mosquitoes Found to Carry Diseases," new cases of West Nile notwithstanding, we’ll never forget about Malaria and Dengue; Bostonist picked up a Metro at Downtown Crossing on the morning commute. We’d sworn off the Metro over a month ago, but every now and again a copy makes its way into our hands. It’s Friday after all, and we spied a picture of one of our favorite man among men, Jim Koch, to the right of the Imbiber's column. Apparently Bostonist missed out on the Faneuil Hall event yesterday when Sam Adams, err, the Boston Beer Company, empties out all the old beer they’ve collected in the past year into a dunk tank and makes founder Jim Koch sit on the bar waiting for a bath. Koch was guaranteed at least one trip into the tank yesterday as Tim Wakefield took aim at the target. Celebrity appearances aside, Bostonist missed the drinking more.
Speaking of Anniversary Parties, Icarus in the South End is celebrating its 27th Anniversary this month. In honor of that, they are offering a fixed three course dinner for prix fixe of 27 dollars. Bostonist loves a bargain and $27 ain't cheap but it is an absolutely fabulous steal, most of thier entrees are regularly 30+ dollars. This deal ends with July, but there is still time to run over to 3 Appleton St. and take advantage of this deal, if you can get a seat.
Tonight at The Independent in Somerville (detecting a theme?), Mash Ave presents Jadmix (Ireland). This postman-by-day travels all the way from the Emerald Isle to deliver mashups through rain, sleet or snow. Jadmix has mashed up some raps by Dr. Dre and Grandmaster Flash with funky instrumentals.
Located in Harvard Square, Phatt Boys is a new restaurant that opened up offering "full-flavored food and spirits." With a name like Phatt Boys and beer called "Phatt A** Ale," this isn't a trendy upscale Harvard Square Restaurant. Located next to Fire and Ice, the bar boasts a spicy mix of BBQ style meals. An easy hop off the Red Line and across the street from a parking lot, this restaurant is very easy to get to, located on 50 Church Street. The restaurant has two parts; an atrium area serves as the bar space, which gives it a nice outdoor open feeling with three floors of ceiling space (but still cools you off in the AC).
