Sports Redux: Giantkillers

It's been quite a year for the BC basketball team. They went down to Chapel Hill, shocked Carolina, and got everyone fired up. Then they came home and lost to Harvard, and everyone wandered off. Clearly, the only way to get our attention is to knock off college basketball's elite. Enter Duke. The Blue Devils came to Conte Forum last night not having lost to the Eagles since 1985. Well, forget about that; BC knocked Duke off 80-74, largely on the strength of 21 points by Tyrese Rice, who became the seventh Eagle ever to score 2,000 career points. With only four games left, and no Harvard in sight, BC (19-8) looks ready to head into March Madness at least slightly mad.

Sports Redux: Eagle Eye

Scott Clemmensen. Scott, Scott, Scott-Scott, Scott. How quickly we forget. We were happy as you and your crop of BC Eagles took home that national title in 2001. And now, here we are, seeing what it's like when you're guarding that opposing net. You've gone and grown up on us. We'd be proud if we weren't so annoyed that the Bruins lost last night.

Losing to the Commodores. Nobody around here has uttered those words since like 1985. But it's the sad reality for Boston College, who lost their nine-game bowl winning streak to the Vanderbilt Commodores, 16-14, in the Music City Bowl.

Well, so much for that. BC's hopes of the ACC Championship and ending up in the Orange Bowl came crashing to earth yesterday, as the Eagles were pummeled by Virginia Tech 30-12 in the title game in Tampa. Hope the Music City Bowl is an acceptable substitute. Freshman quarterback Dominique Davis will rue this day, as he was sacked five times, threw two interceptions and fumbled. At least he'll get more chances.

Did we promise we were finished with the Jason Bay puns? We don't think we did promise, technically. Anyway, it's appropriate, since Jason is now the King of Baltimore after slamming two home runs to help the Sox get back on track, 6-3 at Camden Yards. And if they don't name Maryland's most distinctive geographical after the kid, you can't blame us for trying.

The long drought is over! With the Revolution losing the MLS Cup, and the results of the Superb-oh God, we still don't want to talk about it - it's been almost six full months since a local team brought home a piece of significant championship hardware.

Among the many reasons why this time of year is so fantastic there sits the ubiquitous "Madness" that is the NCAA basketball tournament. Sure, the hometown BC Eagles (playing tonight at 7:10 on CBS) look to have a very strong chance of busting into the Final Four, that's cause enough for many a Bostonian to celebrate. However, the legions of people who've moved to the Boston area have a great cause to be happy this morning because last night the Bayou Bengals of LSU knocked off Duke, and J.J. Redick. Bostonist grew up in CT. (like many others here) and fled to Boston at the first chance he could get, so there's a sweet spot in his heart for the UConn Huskies, and a dark, cold, rotten place in the recesses of his loathing for Duke and the Dukies of old - Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurly, Steve Wojscjeofgjdofowski, Danny Ferry (Only Duke would make a star out of someone named Danny Ferry), and * the current targets of our loathing - J.J. Redick and Sheldon Williams. Sheldon, as a target, doesn't elicit quite the venom as the others but ... he just looks really weird. J.J. Redick though, it's been more than well documented around the web how much people dislike him. Yeah, sure he's a phenominal player, but that doesn't mean you have to like him. How can you like a team, much less their players, when they got this guy pictured to the right, all decked out in Duke gear rooting them on?! It's fundamentally impossible.

We rambled a bit last week about how we’ll be sitting in a task chair in the months to come. Yesterday we sat and watched the BC Eagles come excruciatingly close to beating the Duke Blue Devils for the ACC title in College Basketball. We’ve found something that comes as close to “sports” and “office chair” as we think we can get: dorm bowling. Set in a Boston College dorm, some poor soul is wheeled down the hall and thrust - full speed - into pizza box pins and then the wall. Someone should tell them we prefer candlepin.

The #7 BC Eagles take on the WVU Mountaineers at noon today at MSG, in their third meeting this season. The sportsbooks have the Eagles as a 5.5 point favorite despite BC beating WVU this season by margins of 20 and 12. WVU did pummel an uninspired Providence team Wednesday afternoon and they can point to their two victories against Pitt. Pitt did whip BC last week, however many say that sometimes a team can learn more from a loss than a win. Craig Smith and Jared Dudley earned Big East 1st Team Honors, Al Skinner is the Big East Coach of the Year, and Sean Williams made the All Rookie Team. Yet, the Big East is still bitter over the ACC move and it has been seen in the officiating and the lack of trophy ceremonies. BC should be extremely motivated to win the Big East tournament and give the final Heisman to Mike Tranghese and his awesome smile.
