See? No offense, Eagles or Terriers, but the Beanpot needn't always be all about the BC/BU matchup. Monday's Garden double-header offered a pair of thrilling hockey matchups for Boston-area hockey fans, and while the Boston University community is wincing today, at least they can take consolation in knowing that they were part of an exciting installment of the area college tradition.

We know Boston College and Boston University will usually play a hockey game in February. They did it again last night at the Beanpot and it was a memorable battle, won by BC 3-2 on an overtime blast from Tommy Cross. Next week, top-ranked BC is the unfamiliar position of playing Northeastern in the championship game after the Huskies blanked Harvard, 4-0. BC reserved a spot in the Beanpot title game for the 31st time. Northeastern was in the Beanpot championship game in 2009 and hasn't won it since 1988.

They haven't played badly...and that's the worry, since two of the other top teams in the league have now come into the Garden back to back and left with wins.
Could there be a new top dog in the Beanpot? It's still BU's tournament to lose - they're #1 in the country and have won 11 out of the last 13 - but after yesterday, there's a lot of hope down on Huntington Avenue that things might change this year. The Terriers barely survived a hungry Harvard team, falling behind early and needing a bunch of late scores. Meanwhile, the Huskies, #3 in the country and sniffing their first Beanpot since 1988, routed BC 6-1 on the strength of goalie Brad Thiessen, who stopped 45 out of 46.
It was the rarest of rare occasions: a Beanpot final that didn't involve BU. Instead it was Boston College and Harvard, with the Eagles leading by two midway through the third period. BC almost blew it before taking control in overtime and winning on a Nick Petrecki goal. So two overtime wins for Boston College. And a very relieved Jerry York. BU beat Northeastern in the consolation game.
It seems for some reason, Tom Brady and Randy Moss don't want to take a 6,000 mile flight this week and be reminded of Sunday's crushing disappointment. Brady's ankle issues are well-documented, of course, but Randy is feeling sympathy pain and is skipping the trip to Hawaii as well. So the Pro Bowl will have to go on without them. Tissues all around.
