The big action in town Monday night was at the Garden. Finally, we knew some local teams would leave the big barn happy. The 55th Beanpot Tournament got underway, with B.U. knocking off Northeastern 4-0 and B.C. taking care of Harvard 3-1. There will once again be some icy glares on the B trains this week. Gerald Green got the nod to represent the Celtics at the Sprite Slam Dunk Challenge at the All-Star Game....

In a Valentine's Day heartbreaker, Northeastern had its Beanpot hopes dashed. BU's Chris Bourque gathered up a loose puck in front of Northeastern's goal and backhanded in effortlessly. Bourque, the son of Bruin great Ray, picked up MVP honors in BU's 26th Beanpot in the tournaments 53-year history. The loss was disappointing for Northeastern, hoping for its fifth Beanpot championship, thus continuing the drought that began in 1988. Northeastern played well, despite trailing most of the game, and was able to force overtime with a Jared Mudryk goal with two minutes left.

Bostonist almost forgot that we had a professional hockey team in the city. The Beanpot tournament and the arrival of our yellow pages reminded us however. We at Bostonist are always amazed at how long the winter sport of professional ice hockey is in season, it’s even longer than the NBA. With yellow pages sponsored by the Boston Bruins sitting on doorsteps and hallways all over the city we did what they said and went to the website for ticket information. There aren’t any games being played, just a screening of “Hockey’s Golden Era.” The NHL has been in a labor dispute all season long, locking out the players. The dispute has cancelled some 800 scheduled games and focused hockey fan’s attention to the minor leagues and college teams.
