A weight was lifted from the hearts of the New England bear community today when Red Sox captain and catcher Jason Varitek reluctantly agreed to be paid $5 million to play a game that he is no longer that good at. (Just in case you hadn't heard.) [Boston.com]

The actual maple sugaring season doesn't begin till mid-February, but most area residents will need a few weeks after the politics high of the presidential inauguration before they can handle a sugar high anyhow. Highland Orchard in Sturbridge, MA and Parker's Maple Barn in Mason, NH are two relatively nearby options. Just watch out for the nature surrounding the sugar shacks; nature can be a very lethal thing.

A startup by some MIT grads started making waves a year ago when they began putting some venture capital to use to build their social networking site. After a year of growth some issues arose with their name, coincidentally with their expansion from Boston into New York City and the Bay Area. What a game last weekend, the Pats and Bears. Excitement, defense, hard hitting, and even some of the usual drama added by the NFL Zebras (are they serious with those Pass Interference calls? Flamboyant frontman Jake Shears guided a performance that equally featured the new and old material, the result being that "Comfortably Numb" was just one of several highlights of the evening and not the highlight. Boston-born drummer, Paddy Boom, returning to the lineup after a brief illness, did his hometown right and was the last one off the stage after finishing an encore set that culminated with the pleaser "Filthy/Gorgeous". With "Ta-Dah" at the top of the British charts it's entirely likely that the Sisters will be stomping their disco boots in an even bigger venue upon their next pass through town.
