Animals are out and about now that the weather has turned nicer. Bears are popping up everywhere and not just in Weston. Two Wayland schools, the middle school and the kindergarten-only Loker School, were put in lockdown after a bear was seen near the Dudley Pond Recreation Area. Outdoor gym and recess is not allowed during the lockdown and school officials were working on how to get walking students home safely.
After a throng of young people gathered on Carson Beach in South Boston and, in some cases, fought, State Police, Boston police, transit police, and UMass police will work together to increase patrols of the beach. A weight was lifted from the hearts of the New England bear community today when Red Sox captain and catcher Jason Varitek reluctantly agreed to be paid $5 million to play a game that he is no longer that good at. (Just in case you hadn't heard.) [Boston.com]
The actual maple sugaring season doesn't begin till mid-February, but most area residents will need a few weeks after the politics high of the presidential inauguration before they can handle a sugar high anyhow. Highland Orchard in Sturbridge, MA and Parker's Maple Barn in Mason, NH are two relatively nearby options. Just watch out for the nature surrounding the sugar shacks; nature can be a very lethal thing.
