The Yankees bullpen allowed one hit in 3.2 innings in a 4-2 win over the Red Sox last night. After taking two of three games, New York trails Boston by just a half-game. Mariano Rivera earned his 36th save after holding off a rally in the ninth. The Sox loaded the bases in the ninth on two walks and a single. Adrian Gonzalez struck out to end the game.

We all know Bill Belichick wants his varsity to get enough preseason work in order to be at their best when the games count. But, the first-line players certainly looked ready after just one quarter against a totally overmatched Tampa Bay Buccaneers club and closed out a 31-14 win.
Jacoby Ellsbury got the game-winning hit for the Red Sox for the second night in a row against Cleveland last night. Ellsbury delivered again, this time he clubbed a walk-off home run with two outs in the ninth to account for a 4-3 victory. He singled in the winning run on Tuesday. Ellsbury was 1-5 in both games.
The middle of the Red Sox defense was right in the middle of Boston's offense in Sunday's 5-3 win over the White Sox, the team's second straight over Chicago and 20th, against just six losses in July. Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, Marco Scutaro and Jason Varitek finished the game with seven hits and four RBI. Boston's bullpen shut the White Sox out for 3.1 innings.
If this week's three-game series with the Phillies is a preview of the 2011 World Series, so far, the Red Sox can't be pleased with the results. Cliff Lee thoroughly outpitched Josh Beckett as Philadelphia blanked Boston by a 5-0 score on Tuesday. Lee allowed two hits as he tossed a complete game shutout to improve to 9-2. Lee didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning single by Marco Scutaro. Only Darnell McDonald added another single as Lee posted his third consecutive shutout. Lee hasn't allowed a run in 32 innings.
The Patriots put the wraps on the regular season by beating the crap out the Miami Dolphins. For a game that meant nothing, a lot was accomplished by the top-seeded, 14-2 squad. Even Dan Shaughnessy was happy. Dude usually hates everything.
Patriots fans were probably openly rooting for a massive storm to give the home team another advantage. We only got a cold night in December instead. The Patriots still have plenty of things going their way. They don't lose at home. They don't turn the ball over. And, Danny Woodhead is a good salesman.
Well, that was a lot more exciting than it should have been, huh?
It was three-plus hours of shaky football, unforced errors, and mental miscues - from both sides - and when the dust settled, the Patriots' uncharacteristic lack of focus turned out to be no match for the early blunders of Norv Turner's Chargers. The Pats, as Bob Ryan so succinctly put it, were happy just to get out of town alive.
When does Nick Green start? After Friday's disaster in Chicago, isn't that an appropriate question to ask? Paul Byrd allowed seven runs and 10 hits in just 2.1 innings and probably would have been hit just as hard by his kid's AAU team. Junichi Tazawa survived for 3.2 innings despite allowing five runs on seven hits. Believe it or not, Byrd and Tazawa were worse than it sounds as all 12 of Chicago's runs in the 12-2 loss were compressed into just three innings. Freddy Garcia allowed one run in six innings.
These injury-rattled 2008 Patriots may have finally settled on an identity. And it's not one that's going to please the kind of people who are only pleased by blowouts and offensive explosions. But football purists and fans of efficiency have to be pleased by the Pats' 20-10 win over Buffalo. It was a masterpiece of clock management, a triumph of minimalism.
