Grizzly Bear played live at Berklee Performance Center last Wednesday, and Bostonist was on hand to catch the action. It's taken us this long to recover from the greatness that was a quartet featuring beautiful voices in harmony eerily lit on a halfdark stage.

So here it is, the second installment of must-see gigs for the weekend, next week, and in the future. Get ready, here comes Bostonist's first installment of "Upcoming Music Events and Concerts" (catchier title to be determined at a later date.)

If you have no plans for tomorrow and no money to spend, but want a good way to celebrate the birthdays of John Coltrane (at right) and Ray Charles (both of which are today, but still), allow Bostonist to suggest the Beantown Jazz Festival in the South End. From noon into the evening, two stages on Coumbus Avenue will provide a wide variety of local artists, from the gospel singing of Tracey Gibbs to the latin-influenced jazz of saxophonist Miguel Zenón. You are encouraged (but not required) to make a donation to help fund prostate cancer research, and if you really have no scratch whatsoever but want to do your part in exchange for all the free music, you can volunteer to help out. With weather "sunny but crisp with highs only in the 60s," it should be a fine fall day for some free music. (Also, there's a not-free ($25) concert tonight at the Berklee Performance Center with singer Lalah Hathaway, backed by Miguel Zenón and his quartet.)

One of the pleasures of being a fan of hip-hop music is that we have basically grown up along with the genre. As a result, Bostonist hasn't had too much trouble getting to see some of rap's leading lights up-close while they were still on the upward portion of their meteoric rise, or even when they were resting comfortably at the apogee of their fame. (We also once came very close to running down Ice T with our bicycle, but that is a story for another time.) But loving classic jazz is more complicated, since many of the giants of the field are dead and gone. For that reason, Bostonist doesn't feel so bad about dropping a pretty penny to see the likes of Sonny Rollins, who plays at the Berklee Performance Center on Saturday. We recommend you do the same.
