shoothead, one of our favorite local photographers and the brains behind the super-smart lens rental service ZipLens, put together this video of 892 sequential pictures taken on his morning bike ride commute. Not only is this video insanely clever and very well done, it is also a reminder that Boston needs to do more to become a more bike-friendly city.

Boston-area drivers don't like rules. Boston-area pedestrians don't like rules, and the city is trying to make hay of it by upping jaywalking fines. And now it is the cyclists' turn to feel the heat.

Even though Boston's mayor just discovered bikes, cyclists have to face numerous road hazards. This year's Boston Bike Film Festival will give bike-lovers the opportunity to revel in their chosen means of travel, and it will also give those who are afraid...

This week, Phillyist saw the waters of a landmark fountain run red for a Showtime marketing stunt, the Phils pull ahead, and some serious nostalgia. They also got a chance to review an awesome tribute album, reminded folks to see the King and appreciated their beautiful skyline. Chicagoist knows what it's like to like the Cubs. But naming your kid Wrigley Fields? At least they can breathe a little easier now that Grossman's out and...

Protest over national vs. regional chains, the never-ending debate over the place of cars and bicycles in our metropolises, professional sports scandals, remembering a solemn day, and being issued a search warrant - it all happened across our sites this week! Another banner week at Chicagoist started off with daily reports from food writer Lisa Shames on her attempt to eat only locally grown and raised foodstuffs all week as part of a farmers market...

--Hi-Fi Pizza is usually known as a hangout for drunken concertgoers and college students looking for some absorbency. But a drunken, one-sided domestic dispute went down in front of the Hi-Fi in Central Square early Sunday morning. Isaac Evans McClamy was multitasking by riding his bicycle and arguing with a woman who may have been his girlfriend, all while drunk. He engaged with the Cambridge PD, hitting one officer with his bike tire and causing...

With unseasonable weather descending upon much of North America, schools getting ready to reconvene, and sports seasons getting exciting, it's a busy time of year for us here in the Ist-A-Verse. Luckily, even with all the things we have to do, we still managed to get together to let you know what we've all been up to. After cooling down from a hot weekend of many badass Sunset Junction Street Fair photo dispatches, LAist asked...

The US Census reported that Bostonians love to walk to work. This week, Census data revealed that 12.5% of Boston workers walk, which puts them at the top of the list for American cities with the largest number of workers.

--Police caught a bike thief who got his mitts on the wrong bicycle. The thief stole a cute retro bike from the lobby of an apartment building in Mission Hill a few months ago. The owner did a little detective work on craigslist – where the perp put the bike up for sale!

Tomorrow a public hearing on Bicyclist Safety Bill (aka S 1414) will take place in room B-2 of the Statehouse at 10 am. The bill is the same bill that Kerry Healey vetoed when she was governor helping Mitt out when they were both lame ducks. As we learned the first time around the executive office seemed to misinterpret the bill, thinking that it imposed a new set of rules on recreation. The bill's intention,...

Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on. In Gothamist's neck of the woods, they found out that many things are possible: A man caught a 40+ pound fish off the Rockaways and took it home on the subway. Graffiti...

When The Boston Phoenix hit newsstands on Thursday, a month and a day had passed since Kelly Wallace was killed at the intersection of Cambridge Street and Harvard Avenue in Allston. Wallace was riding her bicycle when the accident occurred on May 6 - her death marked the second Boston bicycle fatality in about a month. Two lives, two scenes, two ghost bicycles. According to the Phoenix story that ran late last month, Wallace wrote...

--A car chase happened in Cambridge last night. WBZ reports, "The chase started in Cambridge when officials spotted the driver of a black Hummer almost hit a police officer as he left the Alewife 'T' station parking lot." This was no ordinary pursuit. One witness described the chase as "insane." The police learned a lesson after the tragic police-chase deaths in Somerville - they eventually let the guy go on. And it worked out fine...

This week is officially Bike Week. Regular commuters, part time enthusiasts, friends, and allies of bikers will be donning their helmets (please put on your helmet) and taking to the streets to celebrate a great form of human powered transportation. While many events take place from Boston to NoHo we're focusing our attention on those happening close to home. Free biker appreciation breakfasts and group rides have been organized. Check out the full listing at...

There's so much going on across the Ist-a-Verse that it's almost impossible to keep track these days. Fortunately, we do it so you don't have to! Londonist took a walk through Oliver Twist's London, thanks to a gorgeous map layer for Google Earth. They also caught up with modern-day fictional London, with the Fantastic Four and 28 Weeks Later. It was a week of insanity over at DCist. They started the week off with...

Green Bicycle from sandcastlematt.

The BPD reports that a woman woke up to find some dude she didn't know sleeping on her couch. No word yet if he looked like Stephen Wright from Half Baked.

Last Sunday, Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey fired off a memo to the Legislature announcing that she would veto the Bicycle Safety Bill, which was established to do exactly what its title suggests.

Bostonist went down to one of our favorite haunts to meet up with a couple of friends. You may know some of them; others were in from out of town. We got the announcement then that within 24 hours there would be at least one Somerville apartment whose living room would contain a stack of Somerville Madonna 2007 Calendars ready for delivery. Yeah, you read right. Somerville Madonna Calendars - and postcards, greeting cards, and magnets. All of it just in time for all your Christmas gifting needs.

The next of the Hub on Wheels community bike tour rolls at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 30 from Boston Bicycle on Beacon Street (across from An Tua Nua, next door to Audobon). Andrew Prescott, founder of Urban AdvenTours, leads the Museum Tour by bike. In his secret life we've heard Andrew once upon a time worked beer promotions by night – so he's got a good personality and a knack for letting you know...

The Subversive Choppers' Urban Legion (a.k.a. SCUL) has been on the Boston radar for a couple of years anyhow. Today MAKE blog, the blog behind the incredibly hot DIY magazine, has uncovered the (mostly) Cambridge/Somerville/Allston wonderment that is the SCUL brand of modified bicycles. If you haven't seen one of their tall bikes, choppers, or other tricked out two-wheeled vehicles you haven't been paying enough attention to your surroundings when walking the streets of Boston. The outrageous changes they've made to the average bicycle are even more noticeable than South End Sara's new Duck Boat markings. MAKE uncovered a Flickr set of SCUL modifications and reported their wonderment. It's unclear if they've had a chance to view Operation SuperPosi, the SCUL movie that screened at Coolidge Corner Theatre last summer. Grab your tall-bike or mod 'em if you got 'em and roll on over to enter your latest creation in the contest MAKE is running – post your bike-mod pic in their Flickr pool and they've promised to send the best of the best a little something something from their swag shop.

As the weather grows warmer, Bostonist often finds ourselves rather damp after riding to work on our bicycle, as the unique pleasure of bicycle commuting can be marred by the sweaty condition of our clothes and body upon arrival. This is especially problematic if Bostonist is, on that particular morning, burdened with the insane tragedy of the Nine O’Clock Meeting. To combat this problem, we have taken to carrying our work clothes in our bag...

Last night Bostonist found ourselves at the Massachusetts College of Art Senior Show, an art opening featuring pieces from graduating seniors. The idea of spending a few hours in a room with a group of undergraduate art students had us a bit apprehensive, but we were a bit disappointed by the distinct lack of existential angst emanating from those present. In general, the crowd consisted of very nice students who seemed entirely relieved to be done with it all. By far, the most dramatic figures at the show were the professors.

Bostonist never tires of urging you to ride your bicycle and with the price of gas and the T climbing ever higher, you really ought to take our advice. Sure, the weather outside is frightful these days, but there are plenty of easy solutions to that problem. And to sweeten the deal, next week MassBike, our friendly neighborhood bicycle advocacy organization, has a bunch of events on tap for Bike Week 2006.

No one likes bike-related head injuries less than Bostonist. Last fall we had an unfortunate run-in with the unused trolley tracks on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain. Riding at a too-shallow angle to the tracks, our front tire jammed in the groove and we were rudely and rapidly sent over the handlebars and onto our head. Banged up but generally intact, we were helped to our feet by kindly passersby, and, after a brief self-inspection, got back on our bicycle and continued on our way. Almost immediately, however, it became clear that we did not know our destination, our current location, our place of employment, or for that matter, anything else.

Springtime is on the horizon, the days are getting longer, and that means (in addition to baseball, and a young man's fancy lightly turning to thoughts of love) bicycles. Bostonist, of course, persists with the bicycle, without respite, through the punishing winter months, but soon the narrow lanes of Cambridge streets will be practically choked with two-wheelers, and bike ticket revenues will once again skyrocket. Perhaps in recognition of this perennial reawakening, the Boston Bicycle Show will take place this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Cyclorama on Tremont Street.

DCist helps us make more sense of the world this week. Posts like this concert review are the reason for Scott Stapp. DCist also enumerates the reasons for playing ultimate frisbee, Condi's tight buns, their love of a local convenience store, and their jealousy of a person in Seattle calling the city. LAist documented graf artist Banksy's most recent visit to LA in one two three posts. They also found the best possible use...

Bostonist was feeling a little down this morning: We were up very late last night doing work and didn't get enough sleep. Then when we woke up, we remembered that Mrs. Bostonist was going away to a conference over the weekend, leaving us sad and alone. Then we went outside to ride our bicycle to work and it was cold, and we had not had any coffee, and we had forgotten to charge up our iPod so that the dulcet sounds of early 90s hip-hop could distract us from our malaise, and we generally felt crappy.

Owing to our general stinginess, our frequent use of a bicycle, and the fact that having a small child means we don't often find ourselves out of the house after the T stops running, (this) Bostonist doesn't take taxis very much anymore. On Saturday night, however, we had occasion to do so and were reminded that we love cabbies because they say interesting things at unexpected moments, frequently with cool accents.

Do you know what movie is being flimed on Charles Street (the Cambridge end)? The last block is filled with trailers and temporary tents. I saw some names on a trailer door - Lucy and Desi - which led me to believe it's an "I Love Lucy" remake. But a quick search on IMDB revealed no movie of the same title. So have you heard what it is? Or, more importantly, do you know what...
