Any objective observer would agree that last night's game was a game the Celtics honestly didn't deserve to win. They didn't shoot well, they looked tired after the Laker game, and they were facing a Bobcat team that may have no identity whatsoever, but played with spunk and energy the whole time. Things looked especially dismal down two with five seconds to go. Paul Pierce missed a game-tying shot, and Charlotte got the rebound. Boston... more ›

Day One is in the books, and sixteen teams have been given their handshakes and Certificates of Participation. Among them is Duke, who failed the reach the second round for the first time since '96. Since Duke-hate is second to only Yankee-hate in the land, that's going to make a lot of people happy. B.C. represented well in Round One, sending Texas Tech and mercurial coach Bobby Knight back to Lubbock with an 84-75 win.... more ›

Since Bostonist knows you are all gearing up for the big anniversary party tomorrow night at the Kinsale, we assume you’ll all be staying home and resting tonight…well, okay probably not, but we thought we’d do a news roundup today because hell, it’s Friday. We certainly don’t expect you to read a newspaper. Bar Brawl on Newbury Street: Bostonist has had its fleeting moments of drunkenness over on Newbury Street’s basement level bar, Daisy Buchanan’s.... more ›

While most Bostonians are nursing a huge Irish hangover this afternoon, others are looking for something to do this weekend. Bostonist has scanned the scene and come up with some options for you. March Madness hits the Worcester area this weekend, with the first round of playoffs held at the DCU Center (since when did it change from being "The Centrum"?) where games are already in progress. A few of today's teams include Big East... more ›

As if Bostonist needed anymore of a reason to park our asses at a bar to drink, not only is tomorrow St. Patricks Day, but it is also the first day of the annual rite of insanity, the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament - or the more common named "March Madness". They're not kidding either. Every year the promise of spring, that faint sign that yes, winter is over, is buoyed by the weeks of hardcore college basketball, beer, pizza, and buffalo wings ... oh, and yelling and screaming at the TV. That's where the madness comes in. more ›

Well, you know what they say - "That's why they play the games". BC came out to play in their last BIG EAST tournament as the #1 seed and with that title comes a nice big target on their backs. West Virginia came out to prove that they belong in the NCAA field of 65 and did so in a big way, going up on the Eagles by as much as 25 points at the beginning of the second half. BC managed to chop the lead down to something within striking distance, a mere 4 points, but never got any closer. The 25 points proved to be insurmountable. This victory for West Virginia will probably ensure that they come down off everyone's "Bubble Team" list (no, not that) and earn a rightful spot in the NCAA tourney as an at-large. That is, unless they win the BIG EAST tournament - then they're automatic. more ›

The #7 BC Eagles take on the WVU Mountaineers at noon today at MSG, in their third meeting this season. The sportsbooks have the Eagles as a 5.5 point favorite despite BC beating WVU this season by margins of 20 and 12. WVU did pummel an uninspired Providence team Wednesday afternoon and they can point to their two victories against Pitt. Pitt did whip BC last week, however many say that sometimes a team can learn more from a loss than a win. Craig Smith and Jared Dudley earned Big East 1st Team Honors, Al Skinner is the Big East Coach of the Year, and Sean Williams made the All Rookie Team. Yet, the Big East is still bitter over the ACC move and it has been seen in the officiating and the lack of trophy ceremonies. BC should be extremely motivated to win the Big East tournament and give the final Heisman to Mike Tranghese and his awesome smile. more ›

With the BIG EAST mens basketball tournament about to begin it means that it's about time for some awards to be handed out. Yesterday the Boston College Eagles provided two of the six players named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, Jared Dudley and Craig Smith. Sean Williams, a freshman on the team, was named to the All-Rookie Team, and Coach Al Skinner was named the Coach of the Year. When you have a... more ›

A rawkus weekend of college basketball culminated last night — the Duke @ UNC cliffhanger, Ohio St. beating Illinois, Mizzou beating Kansas — a weekend that included our Boston College Eagles running over Rutgers on Saturday night for the 78-66 win. That victory clinched the Big East conference regular season title for the Eagles. Even though they finished tied with the almost-always dominant University of Connecticut, they won the conference title as a result of the win they had over UConn earlier in the season - their only matchup in this regular season. more ›

The Eagles have had a great season with 20 straight wins, which came to a hault with a loss to Notre Dame on February 6. Syracuse was able to squeak out a win against the Irishmen the night before the Eagles fell to them. With solid records, great coaches like Al Skinner and Jim Boeheim, and talented players, this is guaranteed to be a close game. more ›
