Happy first weekend of September - and happy Labor Day weekend, too, for our American cities! Let's take a look at what's been happening around the Ist-a-verse. The deaths of two firefighters shook Bostonist this week. Boston's firefighters bent over backwards all week long - first, they fought flames pouring from the Boston Tea Party museum, and then a restaurant fire killed two and injured many more. Their efforts make everything else - like Tom... more ›

April Fool's Day is on the Horizon, but we ain't foolin this week. A solid line up of shows – starting with the Tourfilter DJ Night at River Gods – is ahead. It's mid-week heavy this time around so kick it like a rock star and be thankful you can sleep in on Saturday. We're thinking of format. No, not like the formatting changes that WERS just made to their programming. More like readability of the weekly picks. It's fall now, and since we never really get around to spring cleaning in the spring, maybe we'll get to it in the fall. If you've got suggestions drop them in an email to music at bostonist.com or just right in the comments. But be on the lookout – this... more ›

Last year Bloc Party headlined at the Paradise – this year it was the Bank of America Pavilion. What the hell happened? Did they release something new? Nope. Then what? Oh… MTV2 happened. OK, fair enough. They now have a large enough audience to (sort of) fill the Pavilion, but do they have a large enough set list? Objectively, no, not really. more ›

Usually we try to wax poetic about some sort of relevant piece of information. This week we're dropping all that fluff and jumping right into this week's set of picks – lots of good shows on tap for this week. Zydeco to classical, hip hop to electronica, and Bon Jovi. Monday 7/24: Wattstax with Eli "Paperboy" Reed & the True Loves Allston's Paperboy plays an opening revue for a screening of Wattstax, a film... more ›

The debacle that was Hot Stove, Cool Music last week has made us ready for a week of good music. The debacle in that it poured so hard they had to move the whole thing under the bleachers (inside). The sound quality was poor and James Taylor pulled a rock star move and only made the stage for a single song because he didn't have enough space. This week we're looking forward to cooler... more ›

Don't forget Saturday is the Bostonist Anniversary Party at the Kinsale. In the interim please feel free to rev yourselves up with some of the great music rolling down the pike. Bloc Party-we just love to love them. We got all excited that they were coming out with a new DVD we just blurted it out back in mid-January. Now it's here in the stores and coming to you from Bostonist in our second contest offering this week. Well second in-house contest, we also gave you the tip on which hat to put your name in for the best seats in town. more ›

Okay, like Bostonist, you’ve seen a few of the recent Boston performances by Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Radio 4, and/or !!!/Out Hud, and love most of the post-punk revival bands, right? (If not, we’ll forgive you for skipping over this post). And as for the early ‘80s groups whose angular, dance rock sound today’s bands are reviving (or sometimes merely deriving), well, damn, you can name check with the best of ‘em. Gang of Four,... more ›

For those who were looking, British rockers Bloc Party could be spotted on Landsdowne St. this past September. For those with great foresight, the foursome could be found down Comm Ave. in BU’s backyard months earlier. And for those who missed them altogether in 2005, an early DVD release will hold us over until a new album draws them back across the Atlantic. Within six months, Bloc Party graduated from The Paradise to The Avalon... more ›

We live in an iTunes nation. It's easy to pull a track down to your pod for under a buck. Bostonist still longs for cover art, liner notes, and that masterwork that is a multi-track collection of songs we call an album. Listed here is our much discussed, unbiased by payola, top 25 albums of 2005. After the jump you'll find where some of us stand individually on the subject of the years best. (Apparently... more ›

REMIX! That seems to be the logical impulse for bands and DJ’s alike, with DJ’s being inspired by indie artists and groups feeding their hunger to make people dance. Recent remixes of Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm and Beck’s Guero (as Guerelito) are among the higher-profile examples of full-album treatments, with single-track mash-ups and adaptations having a long-standing presence. more ›

Back in early August, Bostonist advised the timely purchase of tickets to see Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, performing at TT the Bears on September 14. Clearly someone was listening because the show has long sold out and a frenzy of desperate Craigslist posts (buying, not selling) has since ensued. The story follows suit for Sufjan Stevens, playing with Laura Veirs at the Somerville Theatre on September 8. more ›

Bostonist just dipped over to the Orpheum to score face value tickets for the Doves show on September 12th at Avalon. The Boston show is the opener of the Doves month long North American tour. The Manchester trio released its latest album "Some Cities" in the spring, after a three year hiatus since the release of the critically acclaimed "Last Broadcast." Kids in Australia go wild for Doves. more ›

Tonight at the Paradise in Allston, Bloc Party makes its Boston debut to a sold out crowd. Hailing from London, Pitchfork describes BP as "big sound, big hooks, energetic performances, ambition-- all the things that make rock bands sound skilled and confident". Riding the hype of their new album, Silent Alarm, Bloc Party have become media darlings. Although the Globe compares them to Franz Ferdinand and the Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party's sound is more... more ›
