Longwave revs up for its impending shows with OK Go and Bloc Party by playing Great Scott tonight. Expect slick, impressive pop with tight melodies and sweeping chords. Showing modern indie chops but occasionally venturing into 80s rock choruses, Longwave demonstrate that a band can sound radio-friendly even in a waning age of radio. Local boys Wheat (easier to listen to, harder to Google) actually appeal to us a little more, with a more down-home alt-rock style.

Your T pass might melt, but there's hours and hours of free entertainment all around town. It's true year round, but the quality of free music will be damn high for the next 48 hours or so.
Have you played a show in Boston over within the last 18 months? Have you ever crashed on a Boston couch? Do you know someone who did? If so, check out the Boston Music Award nominations. You or they just might be nominated. Listen, we actually enjoy the fact that local musicians are honored once a year through the BMAs. Sure, it's always dominated by the usual suspects (Aerosmith, Dropkick Murphys, Dresden Dolls and, most...
The Boston Pops are mixing things up with the lineup for EdgeFest, the now-annual collaborative endeavor between indie/alternative musicians and the symphony. The Pops sent out a news release today that said the planned "M Ward and Friends" shows on June 26 and 27 have been postponed, so as to allow everyone to have enough time to "create the best possible arrangements for this unique collaboration."
Since daylight savings time kicked it's been hard to get a good nights sleep. Up too late, and up again the next day too early. This week promises to keep us in that very same groove with a list of great music coming to Boston. Who needs sleep anyway? Don't forget to give your support to Exploit Boston Radio, they've got their fingers crossed that Congress and their favor of big label music will be beaten. Listen up for hot local tunes.
It's tough to not envy our Austin peers these days, as the sonic ear candy that is South by Southwest looms in mid-March. Without the ability to hop on a plane and hightail it to Texas, many have been left to look at initial lineup announcements and imagine wandering Sixth Street with happy grins on their faces. A new tool on the official festival site could add to the bitterness, but it can also...

Usually we try to wax poetic about some sort of relevant piece of information. This week we're dropping all that fluff and jumping right into this week's set of picks – lots of good shows on tap for this week. Zydeco to classical, hip hop to electronica, and Bon Jovi. Monday 7/24: Wattstax with Eli "Paperboy" Reed & the True Loves Allston's Paperboy plays an opening revue for a screening of Wattstax, a film...
Tomorrow night, July 11, is the Exploit Boston Game Night at Common Ground in Allston. The evening has grown from it's humble beginnings at True Ground in Somerville to a still modest collection at the Paradise Lounge to the current incarnation of nearly 40 games to choose from at Common Ground in Allston. From 7 to 11 pm the cardboard lids will be removed, childhood memories relived, and good wholesome fun (and beer) will be enjoyed. This week a handful of prizes will be given out, and Bostonist will be on hand to give one lucky winner a pair of tickets to the Paradise show July 30 with Editors and Bon Savants. Exploit Boston has secured other gift certificates (to places like The Games People Play to Common Ground itself.) Apples to Apples is the house favorite – a game you can jump into at any time and still do well – and doesn't come with the same time commitment level as, say, Risk.
We're booting up the contest machine again to bring you a few more tickets for the Paradise Rock Club show coming up July 30 with Editors. Straight out of the UK, these post-punk revival rockers have gained much attention with their album infused with sounds of some greats like Joy Division, Doves, and Echo and the Bunnymen. They caused quite a buzz last year when they hit the world with their debut album "The Back Room." You can listen to the track (RA | Windows) watch the video (RA High | Low) for their single Munich. They're playing the Paradise with local favorites the Bon Savants. Who we've heard will be dropping an album real soon – the July 30 show with Editors may be your first chance to pick it up. Drop your 411 in the form after the jump for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the show. Winners will be notified by email. Next week your chance to win comes in with the tide of the next Exploit Boston Game Night.
We're not talking publishing here – we're talking Brit Rock. The post-punk revival has brought Editors into the public eye with their album infused with sounds of some greats like Joy Division, Doves, and Echo and the Bunnymen. They caused quite a buzz last year when they hit the world with their debut album "The Back Room." They're out on a world tour now, appeasing UK audiences who can't seem to stop clamoring for more. You can listen to the track (RA | Windows) watch the video (RA High | Low) for their single Munich or keep your eyes open for them on one of the few US dates on this tour - ten to be exact. Paradise Rock Club is on the list, Boston is one of the lucky ten cities in the US, for a July 30 show. Grab your tickets fast, the NYC date (the night before) has already sold out and they're playing the Paradise with local favorites the Bon Savants. But you know, Bostonist is your friend and we like to give you stuff. Today we're kicking off a set of contests to get you in to the Editors show for free. Take the jump and slip us your email address in our super fancy electronic submission form. Winners will be drawn at random and notified by email. Or just go add them to your myspace friends.

This week we're trying hard to think about something other than how hard it is out here to be a pimp. Well, ok, maybe Bostonist is looking at the Oscars and just scratching our heads. We didn't know Jon Stewart could be that bland. We're still waiting to hear what Three 6 Mafia were wearing that made the camera all jakey last night. Now that we're done with the Academy we're looking back to Grammy....
Despite recent surges in population (due to the start of the academic year) and some violent events in the not-too-distant past, Allston has not, in fact, been declared a disaster area (as opposed to New Orleans, shown at right). But these similarities are exactly what makes Boston's own "Rock City" the perfect place to host three nights' worth of benefit shows for Katrina relief and recovery
