You could always shell out 90 smackers for a front row seat to Boston Ballet's annual production of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker." You'll get a nice plushy red seat at the Opera House, and be treated to the usual saccharine parade of sugar plum fairies, mouse soldiers, and marzipan shepherds.

Although (this) Bostonist is not a fan of the Holiday time productions of "The Nutcracker" or "A Christmas Carol", even we can admit that there is a certain something about them which signals the beginning of all things wintry.
Bostonist was surprised to read the Boston Herald headline “Hotline: Get a crack at ‘The Nutcracker’.” From recent features in the Herald we’ve come to expect more racy headlines like “Get Crack at ‘The Nutcracker’.” The Boston Ballet production is playing on Washington St. in the Theatre District at the Opera House, close to the Common and the darker streets of Boston at night. We hoped we’d find a bit of juice in the Herald blurb, unfortunately no candid shots of drug deals, just a heads up on an appearance of some Nutcracking characters at Copley Place Center.
When Bostonist thinks of the theater scene here in the city, we immediately think of our beloved Mayor Menino front and center at a matinee viewing of "Kiss of the Spider Woman." Okay, so we never really thought of him hitting up the theater district at all, but Menino announced his "Mayor's Holiday Special" for this upcoming month of December. Teaming up with ArtsBoston.org, a non-profit association that oversees lots of the city's performing arts groups, Menino's "special" includes half-price tickets to many holiday themed shows, like the Boston Ballet's Nutcracker ($18.50), Irving Berlin's White Christmas at the Wang Center ($27-$37), and ImprovBoston Holiday Spectacular ($10). You can order all these tickets through the "special" website, where you can also buy full priced tickets if you are a high-roller. The Mayor also announced the annual, small perk for Boston drivers out there: free metered parking each Saturday from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Bostonist must warn you all that they still do enforce the 2 hour limit though. Scrooge in the form of a meter maid will dampen your holiday cheer.
