The Red Sox pitching staff asserted itself with 15-strikeout effort, earning the Red Sox a huge 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays last night. The Sox last allowed three runs or less was in a 14-0 win over Toronto on September 6. The Sox were 1-7 in that stretch. Josh Beckett (13-5) pitched well in his first start since spraining his ankle, with a six-inning stint that yielded the Rays three runs in six innings on seven hits. Beckett struck out seven batters. Alfredo Aceves and Daniel Bard each pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Aceves had two strikeouts and Bard three. Jon Papelbon earned his 30th save with a scoreless ninth inning. more ›

Texas had their way with the Red Sox on Friday night with a 10-0 rout and the Red Sox returned the favor yesterday by overpowering the Rangers, 12-7. An eighth-inning barrage highlighted by Carl Crawford's grand slam put Boston up 9-3. Crawford finished 2-5 with four RBI. Dustin Pedroia finished off Texas in the sixth with bases-loaded double that scored three runs. Boston's offense had 16 hits, a total that included four hits from Josh Reddick. more ›

Ah, lists. They're good for giving us stuff to post about, we suppose. And stuff to look at, too. The latest list in a series of lists of stuff where Massachusetts ranks pretty well is a list of the most beautiful college libraries. BC's Bapst Library, with its gorgeous Gothic architecture, tops the list, while Harvard nabs two spots (Widener at #14 and Baker at #20). Yale is also recognized twice, with the classical Sterling Memorial Library at #10 and the modern Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library is #24. Mount Holyoke's Williston Library comes in at #21 and the Baker Memorial Library at Dartmouth sneaks in at #25 to round out the New England contributions. To celebrate, here's a gallery of a few of the local beauties, all showcasing a distinct lack of studying. more ›

Because two days after Evacuation Day, the Hub has a fresh reason to celebrate: El Pelón, the taqueria that burned to the ground in last year's fire on Peterborough Street reopens in its new location today at 5 p.m. more ›

We'd heard the rumors that the restaurants destroyed in last year's Apocalypse on Peterborough Street would be priced out of the fancy new mixed use building that the owner plans to build in their place and we despaired. Our beloved El Pelón Taquería was dead. more ›

Not all of us are convinced that photographer stephieseye took this photo around Boston, let alone on Earth. The triangular peaks in the background look like sand dunes, pyramids, or maybe spacecraft shells. But no, this is apparently just a well-timed, shadowy picture of the recreation center at Boston College. Well seen and shot. more ›

For the 248th time, Boston College and Boston University players stared each other down before the puck dropped and a men's hockey battle began. It was the first instance in the rivalry's storied history, however, that Eagles and Terriers players did so on ice featuring a Green Monster backdrop. more ›

Mary Daly, longtime Boston College professor and radical elemental feminist (post/Christian) theologian, passed away last weekend. Daly often criticized the "eight deadly sins of the fathers: processions, professions, possession, aggression, obsession, assimilation, elimination and fragmentation." She was a vegetarian and animal rights activist as well. Her many books included classics like The Church and the Second Sex and Beyond God the Father, which questioned the male-centric nature of much religious belief. Several of her titles were published locally by Beacon Press. more ›

In a game that seemed ready to go their opponents' way, defense and Rajon Rondo saved the day for the Boston Celtics in an 86-77 win over the Orlando Magic on Christmas Day. Paul Pierce was suddenly sidelined for two weeks or less after a surgical procedure on his knee Wednesday and didn't make the trip while Kevin Garnett rejoined the squad on the road after one game on the bench with a bruised thigh. more ›

The last time we heard something from Tina Brown's Daily Beast, it was the dubious claim that sweet little Emerson "Whiteytown" College is the most dangerous school in the country. So we're taking the publication's latest news with a grain of salt... and a side of fries. more ›

If you were in pain watching the Sox yesterday, you weren't alone. Besides the existential pain of watching the Sox scratch out only four hits in their 5-3 loss in Toronto, there was the more immediate pain of watching Dustin Pedroia take a Brian Tallet fastball off the knee (he stayed in the game) and watching Rocco Baldelli slide knees-first at full speed into the outfield wall (he didn't). Baldelli's exit was particularly painful, since his two-run homer in the second accounted for most of the team's offense. more ›

After Boston College laid the smack down on student groups' speaking invitations to William Ayers, free speech prevails and Ayers will address students via satellite today. The Boston College Democrats and Clough Center had apparently invited Ayers, a former radical and current academic. Weather-fearing administrators rescinded the invite. Update: They rescinded the satellite feed, too. more ›

-- Sean Williams, the New Jersey Nets forward and former Boston College basketball troublemaker, was arrested over the weekend just before Boston College upset their division rivals, the despicable Duke Blue Devils. It's been quite a year for the BC basketball team. They went down to Chapel Hill, shocked Carolina, and got everyone fired up. Then they came home and lost to Harvard, and everyone wandered off. Clearly, the only way to get our attention is to knock off college basketball's elite. Enter Duke. The Blue Devils came to Conte Forum last night not having lost to the Eagles since 1985. Well, forget about that; BC knocked Duke off 80-74, largely on the strength of 21 points by Tyrese Rice, who became the seventh Eagle ever to score 2,000 career points. With only four games left, and no Harvard in sight, BC (19-8) looks ready to head into March Madness at least slightly mad. more ›

Lost triumphantly returned to television this week, turning even the most composed fans into shuddering masses of confused jelly. Questions abound—is Locke really dead? Who wants Aaron and why is he so important? Can Sawyer not wear a shirt for the rest of the season, please? It would be easy to write off work or school and just re-watch the show from the beginning, hopelessly taking notes and trying not to freak out over polar bear sightings. This, however, would be a mistake. Instead of wasting time on the black hole that is Lost fandom, why not try another J.J. Abrams show, Fringe? more ›

Losing to the Commodores. Nobody around here has uttered those words since like 1985. But it's the sad reality for Boston College, who lost their nine-game bowl winning streak to the Vanderbilt Commodores, 16-14, in the Music City Bowl. more ›
