We've got a new controversy, courtesy of the Boston Herald. President Obama mentioned meeting a teacher from Boston named Robert Baroz who has been laid off three times in four years. Baroz visited the White House but never met Obama. He's currently employed, too. The Herald says he fudged on Baroz being unemployed to bolster his jobs bill. The President never said he was unemployed. Three pink slips in four year is no way to live. more ›

The Boston Herald's Friday Throwdown topic is: Occupy Boston: Rebels or whiners. We love the idea of participation in any public forum. But, we have a pretty good idea of what the Herald forum will produce and much of it won't be pro-Occupy Boston. That is being kind, honestly. Think train wreck. more ›

The Herald is finding traction in the Brookline Pledge of Allegiance non-controversy. It's currently optional in Brookline where some want it banned. Republicans want to keep it and Governor Deval Patrick wants to keep away from it. President Obama used some Pledge verbiage during last Thursday's jobs speech and the Herald seemed surprised that a former constitutional law professor was aware of the Pledge of Allegiance. We hope the Herald knows what we're sure the president knows: the phrase "under God" wasn't always in the Pledge. We're enjoying the paper's coverage of this, though. A peacenik reference is hard to pass up. We loved seeing the Herald try to connect Dick Cheney to this. more ›

Congressman Barney Frank is commenting on everything lately. The ubiquitous Anthony Weiner scandal, which comes to a head today when he resigns, drew Frank in. He passed on judging the soon to be ex-Congressman by saying "Given these circumstances, where I was myself engaged in activity I shouldn't have been...I just don't think it's appropriate for me to set myself up as the judge of others." more ›

The proposed sale of the Faneuil Hall Marketplace lease held by General Growth Properties to Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp. is apparently off for now. The Boston Redevelopment Authority rejected the deal because, according to new BRA boss Peter Meade, General Growth didn't provide enough information on Ashkenazy's "financial reserves" and other projects. General Growth also didn't let Ashkenazy meet with the Faneuil Hall Merchant's Association. The General Growth lease runs until 2074. In response to allegedly "biased" coverage of President Obama by the Boston Herald, the White House denied the paper full access to Wednesday's fundraisers in the Hub. In response to the ban, the Herald went ahead and proved the White House had a point. Michael Graham compared President Obama to Richard Nixon, the paper quoted a very negative assessment of President Obama by Mitt Romey, the Track called the president "Barry," and Howie Carr, well, don't ask. more ›

President Obama visited Boston yesterday and left with a pile of campaign cash from two fundraisers. Ray Allen and Governor Deval Patrick opened for Obama at Boston Center for the Arts in the South End. Allen described Obama as "our coach" while Governor Patrick touted his performance as president, citing the economy and the killing of Osama bin Laden. more ›

Despite evidence that shows the cost of basic food items has decreased recently in Massachusetts, Hub shoppers say they spend more on groceries now. Nationally, 9 out of 10 Americans say they spend more at the grocery store now than in 2010. The Boston Herald's Inflation Watch surveyed the cost of a dozen staples - bread, milk, eggs, chicken and coffee, etc. - at four local supermarkets and found the price dropped $0.96 to $34.98 last month. The sample includes Stop & Shop, Shaw’s and Roche Brothers in Boston and Market Basket in Somerville. more ›

In what is an unmistakeable sign of the times in a troubled newspaper industry, the Boston Herald is negotiating with the Boston Globe to print and deliver even more copies of the Herald than it already does. The plan would call for the Globe to print all of the Saturday edition and parts of the daily and Sunday Herald at the Globe. The Globe already distributes the Herald in Cape Cod, southern New Hampshire and other areas. more ›

Senator Scott Brown faces questions today regarding his now false assertion that he saw the pictures of the quite dead Osama bin Laden. Democrats have seized on what is certainly embarrassing, and the Boston Herald has rolled out the ultimate insult: Brown is being compared to Dan Quayle. (This is possibly worse that Quayle's blunders.) more ›

The Massachusetts gubernatorial race will be dragged back into the 21st Century today, after a rapid decline into the campaign gutter, thanks to a high-tech, live-streamed debate sponsored by Boston Herald, Emerson College, and Fox25. The “Race for Governor 2010" forum runs from noon until 1 p.m at Emerson College’s Semel Theater. Emerson grad Maria Stephanos (Fox25) will moderate. more ›

A day after Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea Cabral said there was "nothing remarkable" about the circumstances leading up to Philip Markoff's suicide, the Boston Herald reported that an anonymous source "close to the Suffolk House of Corrections officers’ union" said Markoff was "hell-bent" on taking his life. Markoff, referred to as the "Craigslist Killer" was previously on suicide watch, just not at the time of his death. more ›

The Boston Globe's average weekday circulation dropped 23.2% to 232,000 as of March 31, or a year after the circulation was over 300,000. It makes us wonder if the salad days of the Globe Death Watch have been foisted upon us again. The Globe has company in the declining circulation club as the Boston Herald (12%) and the Patriot Ledger (10%) also lost readers, just not as much as the Globe did. The Herald seemed almost proud that the Globe sucked much more than they did. According to WickedLocal.com, Fitchburg’s Sentinel & Enterprise circulation increased 2.2%. more ›

It's a sorry indication of the liberal cone of silence that we live in that we missed the Herald's ineffably brilliant cover yesterday that featured Scott Brown and his expiration date. We're republishing it here to remind ourselves of its greatness. Remember that time about a year ago when everybody thought the Globe was going to go out of business and the Herald would be the only paper in town? Actually, we'd be okay with that. more ›

The Herald says Barack Obama and Scott Brown are tenth cousins, linked through the common ancestor Richard Singletary of Haverhill, who died in 1687. How can a Muslim not born in the United States possibly be related to a truck-driving hometown hero? The mind boggles. Could these men share genetic predisposition to a condition not covered by health insurance? In "related" news, Brown claims he could take Obama on the basketball court (with help from his daughter). [Boston Herald] more ›

Look, we'd rather not say anything about this Scott Brown business until he, you know, actually does something in his official capacity. Driving the truck to Roxbury doesn't count. But one thing that we most decidedly do not want to do is to make out with Scott Brown. That is a sentiment that the Boston Herald does not share. more ›

The Boston Herald has endorsed Scott Brown for Senate, citing not being a Democrat as a primary qualification for the state representative. The Herald also praises Brown's fiscal conservativism and and suggests his post as a lieutenant colonel in the National Guard’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps gives him special insight into the war on terror. more ›

Have we mentioned that we love living in a two newspaper town? From The Herald: "The “meep” annoyance has once again reared its asinine head. The high schoolers in Danvers alert the City Desk they are planning a march in a few hours — 11:30 a.m. — across from the high school." more ›

Normally, the Boston Herald, and other papers, relies on the Associated Press for information. This week, the roles got reversed as an AP story referred to prior reporting by the Herald. On Tuesday, Bostonist noted a Herald story that said the federal government sent economic stimulus checks to Bay State prisoners. The AP reported this on Wednesday night and noted "The Boston Herald first reported that the checks were sent to inmates." A Social Security Administration audit is underway. more ›
