There's no clever way to say it: This is the last word from Bostonist. Last week, Gothamist informed me that Bostonist will be going on hiatus and the blog will be shut down. At least we outlasted the 2011 Red Sox. Most of all, I have to thank anybody who has ever read Bostonist in the past year or so since I became the editor. I appreciate knowing that so many people chose to visit this site to get my perspective on what happens in the world. more ›

Are you angry enough at Alex Burrows to come up with clever teeth puns? Or, is the Bruins on-ice response sufficient revenge? Do you have personal experience with one of Boston's many outdated Orange and Red Line trains? You've got the chance to do something about it now by joining the Bostonist team. The process is simple: Contact Bostonist's editor, me, at matt@bostonist.com, and submit a short writing sample and some information about yourself - a resume is welcome but not required - that illustrates what you'll bring to our blog. No topic is off limits. Current events, politics, pop culture, movies, sports, technology, arts, etc. Anything is welcome. Don't be afraid (to try) to be funny, either. One suggestions from Bostonist: write about something you know or love. College students welcome. more ›

Bostonist likes these pictures for some reason. There's no theme to this gallery, that's why it goes from Randy Moss to potentially subliminal sunbathing. They're just interesting photos. more ›

With Boston facing the first official heat wave of 2010 this week, people will do anything to beat the heat, possibly even driving directly into the water. Okay, it wasn't on purpose and really isn't a laughing matter, but Jen Bean, of Danvers, and Stephen Ruest, of Ipswich, were in a Ford that ended up in the drink. The plan was to put their boat in the water. After the brake released, the truck slid into Pope's Landing in Danvers. Bean and Reusst are fine. The truck is a total loss. [WCVB] more ›

Bostonist found something you may never see again: A post by one of us about Mel Gibson actually making a movie in Boston, or anywhere. As you know, recordings of Gibson's profane rants have been dominating the celebrity gossip industry lately. His movie-making future, charitably, is in doubt. more ›

Bostonist is very much pro-beer, and quite possibly, had at least one this weekend. Beer books? Good. Craft beer? Check. Tasting? Affirmative. We even like it when politicians support local breweries. We don't like beer when it gets mixed with crime like it did in Cambridge on Saturday night. A man was stabbed in an incident based on a dispute over beer. The Cambridge Chronicle got the scoop in e-mail sent by City Manager Bob Healy to city officials. All charges alleged until proven under law. [Cambridge Chronicle] more ›

Once again, the Bostonist ship needs more bloggers on board. Help us sail through the murky waters of the internet, pointing out important landmarks along the way and anchoring the site's snarky yet informative take on Boston. We need people willing and table to blog often--multiple times a day is preferable--on Boston-related news, politics, sports, and events. Whether you'd like to cover food, music, arts, or other topics, our top priority is being on top of what happens. We're particularly interested in getting bloggers from the local colleges and universities, so if you're a student, definitely get in touch. more ›

When Bostonist read last week that Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca and Boston business guy Jack Connors were leading a group to purchase the Boston Globe and involve a "nonprofit foundation" to run the paper, we asked the following question: "So, the Globe gets sold and still doesn't make money?" In the Herald today, Mike Barnicle Jayson Blair Howie Carr began his column with the following statement: "Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought The Boston Globe already was a nonprofit newspaper." more ›

The last thing Boston's political scene needs is some Karl Rove-style tactics injected to its already tension-filled campaign season. But, that's just what we've got from the folks at ChangeforBoston.org despite their alleged support for reforming what ails Boston. more ›

Any alleged negative attention garnered by Craigslist as a result of the "Craigslist Killer" case seems to have had little impact on how people use the Internet classified ad site, or on how well its business is doing. As a motion to investigate media leaks in the case filed by the attorney for alleged killer Philip Markoff tried was being rejected by Judge Frank M. Gaziano, another arrest involving illicit Craigslist ads was made on July 8. Two alleged prostitutes and a client were arrested in a sting run by Somerville police after officers responded to two separate craigslist ads for prostitution. Bostonist was under the impression Craigslist was cracking down on ads for "erotic services". One thing is certain, business appears unimpeded at Craigslist as the AP reported in June that the San Francisco-based company's revenue is expected to rise 23% and reach the $100 million mark. more ›

The Google section of the Internets is going crazy for the TD Banknorth Garden, which is now going by TD Garden. According to Google Hot Trends, TD Banknorth Garden is today's 50th fastest rising search keyword in the U.S. Bostonist has an idea or three why this is happening. Parents are probably sick of this crap but those wholesome young men known as theJonas Brothers are taking over the Hub on Friday. The Bruins did announce their complete 2009-2010 schedule, too. How much interest does the next Scott Walker sighting generate? Bostonist bets the fuss is over the name change from TD Banknorth Garden to TD Garden that will lead to one lucky fan winning free tickets to every event at the Garden for the entire 2009-2010 season. It's still the Garden to Bostonist. more ›

Pitchers' Duel: A dramatic event with little scoring and no margin for error. Jon Lester and Brian Bannister demonstrated what the term meant last night as each man carried a shutout into the eighth inning in a 1-0 Red Sox win over Kansas City. more ›

The city of Boston and the men who fill the ranks of the Boston Fire Department simply can't get along. Contract disputes have long since gone nuclear and now any controversy turns into a five-alarm blaze of rhetoric and posturing perfectly designed for the city's competitive media outlets. more ›

Don't even think about last night's chokefestloss in Baltimore again. It was so June. There's another game today that, hopefully, will feature Beckett being Beckett - 7-1, 1.94 ERA last 10 starts. And, the bullpen can get a second straight day off. more ›

The woman who gave birth to a certain Bostonist says "If you're not kind to animals then you're not kind to people" and she says it regularly. Translation: Stop killing ducks, kitties and any cute, or ugly, animals. We need to say this in 2009? C'mon people! more ›

Rhode Island is a nice, plucky state. Bostonist loves to have the Ocean State in our neighborhood. It beats having Florida's panhandle on the southern border. But, recent headlines emanating from Rhode Island have resulted in a resounding "HUH?" from this Bostonist. Rhode Island is having an identity crisis and it's time for an intervention. more ›

When Josh Beckett stomped off the mound after the fourth inning, he sure looked mad about something. Perhaps Beckett was realizing that he is done pitching against Atlanta for the balance of the 2009 season. Beckett (9-3) stopped the Braves cold, again, this time with seven shutout innings, six hits and six strikeouts as the Red Sox beat the Braves, 8-2. Beckett pitched 16 scoreless innings against Atlanta this year. Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Paplebon closed the game out. Both were adequate, at best, as Paplebon served up a home run to someone named David Ross, who exists and played eight games for Boston in 2008. more ›

Senator John Kerry simply can't help himself and has, yet again, confirmed he is like a serial killer whose victims are jokes. He took on John McCain's unmentionables and the educational bona fides of "the troops" - Bostonist knows there must be more examples but we also think these two prove the point. And now, Kerry unleashed his funny bone on Sarah Palin by saying he wished she had disappeared instead of former presidential wannabe/frequent flyer/gigolo Mark Sanford. Bostonist won't lose sleep if Governor Palin stayed out of, or in, frankly, the lower 48 so Kerry's point isn't lost on our corner of the Internets. However, in light of David Letterman's skirmish with Palin it occurs to Bostonist that if Democrats give her more free publicity then her disappearance, that Kerry mentioned, from the national scene won't come to pass. more ›

On Tuesday, CNN reported that President Obama will extend "health care and other benefits to the same-sex partners of federal employees" by signing a memorandum on Wednesday. As more states begin to recognize gay marriage, this could be seen as another reason for supporters of gay marriage to be optimistic that gay marriage will be allowed in any state. As Bostonist recently illustrated, attitudes on this issue still inspire heated exchanges and intense emotions. The President has recently been criticized by gay rights groups because his Justice Department supported the Defense of Marriage Act in court despite candidate Obama's pledge to try to repeal it. Obama has also not carried out his promise to drop the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. more ›

It's June. June 13. The game last night was the 61st game of 2009. But, it really could have been played in October. The last two World Series champions battled in a game the Red Sox won 5-2 in 13 innings in a game that was filled with great pitching, timely hitting and error-free defense. Bostonist is making no predictions but Boston and Philadelphia, well, hey, you saw the game. Admit it. You thought it, too. The Herald did it, too. more ›

Caution! You are about to enter a no-hit zone! (Okay, there aren't literally zero hits. But, there are very few hits.) The sports team at Boston.com needs an O'Reilly-esque warning before allowing Red Sox fans to look at the David Ortiz Watch. Yes, you can relive each day of Big Papi's never ending struggle at the plate with this painful graph. Great. Thanks. We know there was a big hit for Papi last night, which means there were no dry eyes at Bostonist. This Bostonist couldn't resist that opportunity. Here's something for Sox fans. more ›
