One Debate, Ted Kennedy, and Boston

Great article in this month's Boston Magazine by Joe Keohane, who looks at the way that Ted Kennedy's political career was shaped by his experience in Boston politics. For Keohane, it all comes down to the pivotal 1962 debate when Eddie McCormack wiped the floor with Kennedy in front of a crowd of Southie Irish.

Everyone wants the best. Everyone promises nothing but the best. Few times in life do you ever get the best of anything. That is why we’re taking particular notice of this year’s Best Of lists. The first magazine to announce its contenders for the best of all of Boston for 2009 is The Phoenix. (It may be a little early, but they want to be the best of the bests.)

Get outta town is exactly what former Dig editor and BoMag contributor Joe Keohane decided to do a while ago, making the unthinkable move to our near-neighbor, New York. When Keohane made up his mind to leave the city, he was surprised by how quickly Boston turned a cold shoulder. He tried to conjure up moments of nostalgia:

It appears that the Boston culinary community has a bone to pick with Tim Cushman, chef of the highly praised Leather District sushi restaurant O Ya, who was recently named one of Food & Wine's Best New Chefs of 2008. The issue? According to Boston Magazine, Cushman may have been pulling a Dane Cook all along, stealing material from seasoned pros to fuel his own stratospheric rise.

--Erwin Hirsch, chief of trauma surgery at Boston Medical Center, died yesterday when his boat capsized off the coast of Maine. Hirsch also did tours in Vietnam and Iraq. He was 72 years old. [Boston Herald, Boston Globe]

Boston Magazine released its annual power issue, which is an annual must-have for any lifestyle magazine. This power list leads to the inevitable question, what does "power" mean, anyway?

Ex-Herald crime writer Michele McPhee hasn't completely abandoned print journalism for the joys of radio--which include sharing the booth with media maven Mayor Menino. She has a lengthy (4000+ words) and well-sourced piece in the newest issue of Boston Magazine that brings perspective and insight to the much-chronicled troubles of the Boston Police Department.

Deval Patrick has been making news lately with the State of the Commonwealth and his public support of presidential candidate Barack Obama. But what of Massachusetts' other top dog, Speaker of the House Sal DiMasi? Bostonist read Paul McMorrow's lengthy Boston Magazine profile of the Speaker of the House and found the article too interesting not to sum up.

--Alexander Pring Wilson, who was convicted of manslaughter for the 2003 stabbing of Michael Colono in Cambridge and then tried again, has pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter. He will serve two years and one day. [Boston Globe]

--Former Boston City Councilor, Albert "Dapper" O'Neil, who probably enjoyed the best nickname bestowed up on a councilor, passed away at age 87. The Globe used many adjectives to describe him, all of which can be freely interpreted, such as "irascible" and "colorful." He opposed desegregation and, in the words of the Globe, "railed against feminists, gays, and immigrants." [Boston Globe]

Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline," the song near and dear to any Red Sox fan's heart, always sounded like a love song. Diamond certainly sang it like a love song, and it was easy to imagine a mystery Caroline who made Diamond's blood run hot. Imagine our surprise when Diamond revealed the inspiration behind his classic--an image of Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. A very young Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. Diamond said, "It was a picture of a little...

--Masshole victory! The Big Dig tunnels will get wireless antennas! Now drivers can be even more distracted! [Boston Globe] --Wolfe Styke, the MIT student who was stabbed multiple times by an ex, has been released from the hospital. His ex, Wellesley student Anna Tang, will be held in jail until her next court appearance on December 3. [Boston Globe] --A commuter train struck and killed a man walking on the tracks in Lynn yesterday...

Boston Magazine had an exclusive in which they busted Boston Herald employees stealing dailies The Metro and Boston NOW from newspaper stands. While the Herald thinks its being all sneaky and undermining (though they are denying Boston Magazine's report), they obviously haven't realized that the free dailies have a fertile quality. They multiply, breeding all day long, piling up on the MBTA train seats, stuffing the canvas bags of commuters, and, by the end of...

MC Slim JB at Boston Magazine just did a piece about the wave of gentrification in the South End. People with obscenely expensive tastes are either moving in or visiting too much, and the prices are going up. Not only do the new residents like to throw money around, but they also look tacky doing it. One woman quoted in the piece proclaims, "The only cool people [at the Beehive] are the bartenders—half the...

We thought it was weird when a former Nader advisor filed suit against Bill Belichick for Videotapegate. But Paul Flannery at the Boston Magazine blog came across what may be the weirdest lawsuit of all time. Jonathan Lee Riches is a convicted felon who likes to file lawsuits. Flannery writes that Riches filed 36 of them in September. In the Pats-related suit, according to the Smoking Gun, Richman hand-writes, "Defendants cheated in the 2005 Superbowl...

We had heard word from a kind tipper that some of the Weekly Dig staff gave notice as soon as former Editor Michael Brodeur found out that he was fired. The Boston Magazine blog just confirmed that managing editor Shaula Clark and staff writer Julia Reischel are indeed gone.

We've fretted over the fate of food delivery people before. Now, after the Globe's latest piece about the perils faced by food delivery people, we ask you to hug your pizza delivery guy today. Those people work hard for their money, and it's a risky gig. There have been 52 delivery-related robberies this year. The BPD blotter is often full of cases in which a food delivery guy gets held up for a free pizza...

After causing a major freakout at Logan airport by wearing a fake circuit-board device on her chest, Star Simpson said that it was "art" and that she was wearing it for a career fair. Unfortunately, her decision to go to the airport with that artwork on might have scared some employers off. (But at least one of them is sure to find it kind of cool.) It is looking like it really never occurred to...

This week, Boston Magazine blog spread the word that the Globe had hired Veronica Chao, editor of the Improper Bostonian to helm the Globe's Sunday City Weekly section.

We saw the following over at the Boston Magazine Blog a few days ago and thought, now this news story is a winner! Then we got distracted by pipes bursting and raining asbestos all over downtown. In Hyannis, a woman dropped off videos at the local library, only she used the drop box. Apparently she was overzealous in making sure those videos were returned, and somehow the bracelets on her arm got snagged in the...

Okay, okay, before you get insulted, Bostonist is not especially fashionable. And New York is in the throes of its own Fashion Week right now - so Boston is having Fashion Week at the same time? Isn't that just asking for no one to notice? Well, Boston's Fashion Week did indeed start yesterday. Much of the excitement appears to be centered around Natick, though, because of Friday's Natick Collection opening. "Collection" is a fancy word...

It's Miller Time, but you might not be getting to the bar as quickly as you'd like. We heard from a tipper at 4:45 pm that trains were dumping all their passengers off at Park Street and that it was mighty hot and mighty crowded. In a Boston Community Live Journal post that appeared at noon, littlestarletta noted that a communications center at High Street lost the ability to communicate with all trains and buses....

It's official – police are now cracking down on the Common. The bullet in the State House, public OD's, and freaked-out tourists pushed the city brass over the edge, and the BPD is making a move. Now, the BPD will be enforcing curfew on the Common, which means people are required to "move on" from whatever legal or illegal activity they are up to at 11 pm.

Tedy Bruschi will be signing books at Brookline Booksmith on Saturday, September 1, at 2:00 pm.

Former MIT professor and business whiz John Donovan Sr. has been found guilty for staging his own shooting in 2005, wasting a hell of a lot of Cambridge's time, and irritating state Attorney General Martha Coakley. Supposedly, his motive for such weird behavior was that he wanted to get revenge on his son by saying his son had hired Russian hit men to kill him. Donovan went on trial last week for filing a false...

Massachusetts has a reputation for being uptight, and the state police isn't doing us any favors. A State Police Trooper is catching static for having his picture taken with porn icon Ron Jeremy after Jeremy's tour bus had a near-miss with a drunk driver over the weekend. According to Boston NOW, the State Police is now "reviewing" the behavior of the unnamed trooper. Boston Magazine's blog contacted Pastor Craig Gross for the scoop. They...

Ever so often there's a press release that comes into the Bostonist inbox. Yesterday we got a string of eight press missives, all from the same sender. Boston Magazine was on their monthly initiative to grab some attention on the internets. They set up a mail merge and pumped out letters into email. They fit the below format

I thought you might be interested in "For the Love of Cod" - a piece about the surprising staying power of the iconic ceramic fish, out in this month's issue of Boston magazine.

Yesterday a myspace bulletin was at the top of the ticker when we logged in: 123 Party! Arrested!!! Hey Fans and Party Favors-- 123 Party! was arrested on Friday, January 5th, 2007 for dancing on Boylston Street. The Boston Cops provided no sympathy and severely doubted the dance. Turbo, Sonic, and Fury (The new Boston trio) were thrown in cells without any 80's synthpop dance tracks. It was totally bogus. We need you!! To write...
