Teyba Erkesso of Ethiopia won the women's marathon in 2:26:11. She had led the pack since mile 15. Tatyana Pushkareva came in second in at 2:26:14 and defending champion Salina Kosgei was third in 2:28:35. Among the men, Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot (confusingly not the same Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot who's won Boston four times already) dominated and set a goddamn course record of 2:05:51. Tekeste Kebede was the runner-up in 2:07:23, followed by last year's winner Deriba Merga in third (2:08:39) and Ryan Hall in fourth (2:08:41). Meanwhile, the rest of us just sit lazily in our desk chairs, refreshing marathon results as we stuff our faces with lunches of processed foods made with high fructose corn syrup, and plan for free ice cream. Oh, America. [BAA, Globe]
Bostonist was on Beacon Street today, catching the marathoners at about the 23-mile mark. We saw Deriba Merga and Kara Goucher come by in first; Merga went on to win while Salina Kosgei pulled through for the women's win. Check out the pics! Top five in each race:
Well, it's Marathon Weekend. The tourists are here, the runners are out, and the course setup has commenced. Once a year, the Marathon turns runners into celebrities, motivated regular people into athletes, and lazy regular people into drunken spectators. Over the years, Bostonist has compiled a collection of tips on the Marathon; here, we review them for your convenience. We'll be providing a photo gallery of the course later today or tomorrow.
