Burn After Reading is the Coen brother's latest comedic re-imagining of genre conventions, sliding in next to The Hudsucker Proxy (Horatio Alger Stories), and The Big Lebowski (film noir). But despite Reading's frequent attempts to channel Lebowski's spirit, the movie is largely devoid of the madcap energy that makes Lebowski so irresistible, and often devoid of any energy whatsoever. For all its humor (and there will be humor), the movie is a mostly glum affair with serious actors doing serious things quite seriously. more ›

Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline: two of the craziest names you've ever heard? Yeah, we thought so. Well, the names' owners won't really have to worry about that, as they're likely to grow up some of the most beautiful and richest people in the world. Knox and Viv are the newest additions to the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie family, which already involves Shiloh Nouvel, Zahara, Pax, and Maddox. They sure do like names ending in X at the J-P household. Anyway, some media outlet will soon pay more money for photos of these children than you will ever make in your lifetime, and you will be bombarded with these expensive images for weeks, and you will weep, and then these children will take over the world. Believe it. more ›

Londonist are starting to think their city is getting just a little bit too expensive, when even Christian Slater can't afford to go out there. And there's no escaping, as local singer Lily Allen discovered when she was barred entry to the US. The British mapping agency caused further bad karma, by blocking a 3-D representation of London in Google Earth. But the smiles returned to Londonist's faces as they interviewed Baroness von Reichardt,... more ›

After a sparse, lackadaisical August, the fall semester has arrived with a frenzied syllabus of film screenings: a slew of new documentaries, our favorite Terry Gilliam movies, a notoriously disorganized film festival, and a guest lecture from Bruce Campbell, chainsaw-wielder emeritus. Thursday 9/7 Four Eyed Monsters Two pale, artsy Brooklynites met through online personals, maxed out seven credit cards to make a movie about it, moved back in with their parents in Massachusetts, and made... more ›

Leave it to the F.B.I. to finally nab the real criminals in the United States today…the guys who stole the Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt baby shower photos! Despite the country being plagued with terror threats and now a new bin Laden tape, the F.B.I. was able to track down these photo thieves right here to Westfield, Massachusetts on Tuesday night. It seems that camera shop employees, Bill Keyes and Adam Beckwith, had come across... more ›

After a weekend of green, beer, and basketball, Bostonist is drained. It all started for us 10 years ago when our Western Mass. roots were honored as UMass Amherst team went to the Final Four with Coach Cal. and Marcus Camby (who later cost the Final Four standing for “improper gifts” – jewelry and prostitutes). Since then we’ve faithfully filed out our brackets each season. Sometimes we pick the underdogs for an upset and sometimes we glean knowledge from those who have followed entire season. We usually only catch a dozen or so games before the Madness begins. This year seems to be a particularly bad year for our bracket. It’s not any consolation that Dick Vitale is sitting in our boat for the Final Four selections. more ›

It's not often that Bostonist has the pleasure of using the words "modern" and "Massachusetts" in the same sentence, but Design Within Reach seems the appropriate venue to promote just such a mix of old and new. more ›

Boston has become home to some Hollywood stars for a few weeks as director Martin Scorsese's new film, "The Departed," finally began filming. This movie is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film, "Infernal Affairs," and will feature some big Hollywood talent. IMDB describes it in the following blurb: "The story, set in Boston, revolves around a gangster (Matt Damon) who infiltrates the police department and a cop (Leonardo DiCaprio) who infiltrates the gangs.... more ›
