Boston's Brigham and Women’s Hospital completed the 15-hour surgery, the first full face transplant ever performed in the country, last week on Dallas Wiens, 26, of Dallas, Texas. The transplant team replaced his nose, lips, facial skin, muscles of facial animation and facial nerves as his facial skin and features were burned off and he was blinded after his head came in contact with a high-voltage power line in 2008. Mayor Tom Menino injured his left elbow during a trip to Florence, Italy for a conference on urban development last week and is now at Brigham and Women’s Hospital with an infection. Menino has been diagnosed with septic bursitis, a bacterial infection and is being treated with an antibiotic drip for at least 24 hours. Dot Joyce, Menino's spokeswoman, said he's fine aside from the infection. Last year, Menino severed a tendon in his leg. [Globe]
