Boston Blotter: Nursing-home killing, SWAT at NU

-- The killing of a 100-year old nursing home resident may have become even more shocking with the revelation that investigators may be considering Elizabeth Barrow's roommate as a possible suspect. Barrow's son said the two didn't get along well. Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter described her death as "asphixia by manual strangulation." [WCVB]

--Some local gangs have taken time out from their busy schedules of mayhem to post YouTube videos celebrating the aforementioned mayhem. Maria Cramer at the Globe reports that the gangs involved include Castlegate and Morse Street. Needless to say, police are thrilled at their good fortune that the gang members are taping themselves for posterity, but those who work with gang members are worried that innocent people might get in trouble just because they appear...

You know that somewhere in your freezer lurks a pot pie covered in frost. Well, now you've got a reason to clean out the freezer because five people in Massachusetts suffered from salmonella that's been linked to Banquet Pot Pies. Do not eat any Banquet Pot Pies with the code or plant number 5009 or P9. WBZ quotes ConAgra, maker of the pies, as saying "the pies are safe if they're cooked properly." But do...

This time, it's personal. Sean Linehan, the son of brand-new City Council member Bill Linehan, has told police he was the victim of random violence. He said that, after a late-night meal at Teriyaki House following his dad's victory party, he "accidentally walked into a brawl on the sidewalk." He was stabbed in the upper back, which "pierced his lung and broke a rib." And his father is starting his City Council term royally pissed...

Remember when the SJC ruling allowing gay marriage was still brand new, and the Governor wanted to use some legal procedures to keep it from going into effect, but Attorney General Tom Reilly refused to play along, saying that the court's decision was the law and it had to be respected? "How principled," Bostonist thought to ourself at the time, "Reilly is admittedly against gay marriage, but he respects the role of the courts...

There may be people in the Commonwealth who dislike the way the federal government has played fast and loose with the Constitution lately, but apparently, they are not on the Acushnet Board of Selectmen. This week, that august body approved a measure that would force people arrested in the Bristol County town to pay for the cost of their detention - $60 a night. According to David Wojnar, the selectman who proposed the measure, it will apply to all arrestees, which means, if Bostonist understands correctly, that an actual conviction isn't necessary. "We believe people should be accountable for their behavior," he explained. What he (naturally) failed to mention is that his idea is so unconstitutional it makes Bostonist's head hurt.
