  • Boston votes on Tuesday. Today, the Boston Herald provides two potential campaign issues for voters. Michael Flaherty blames Mayor Thomas M. Menino for the lack of Verizon FiOS service in Boston while Menino blames Verizon. Flaherty blames Mayor Menino for a lack of available financing needed to complete work at the unfinished Filene’s site at Downtown Crossing.

    It's almost graduation: you know, that time when the city is flooded with parents, graduates, and moving trucks as everyone prepares to move to their new job and city—or, in this economy, back in with the 'rents. What happened over the past year at the big (and small) schools around town? Bostonist looks back at some news stories, from Harvard's billion-dollar losses to Emerson's Holocaust insensitivity, and provides graduation information as well, including commencement speakers, in which category Berklee blows everybody away.     Bite Size News, April 27: Various Types of Rats Edition

  • Some blame Harvard's unfinished construction for the latest rat outbreak in Allston. [Boston Herald]
  • Former Boston official is collection $162k per year as a consultant to the BRA -- on top of his $97k pension. [Hartford Courant]
  • Ten people have been accused of embezzling $518k (or two years compensation of a BRA consultant) from the city of Malden. [Boston Channel]
  • In a highly scientific study, the often useful BostonTweet named Emerson and BU the most active local schools on Twitter. The study was conducted by asking people who tweets the most. Makes sense, we suppose. Emerson students, grads, and profs pulled out their self-promotion skills to tie for the top spot. Tufts got a fair number of mentions, and a few people pointed out that Suffolk is on Twitter as well. We're a little surprised that high-tech MIT isn't the Massachusetts Institute of Twitter, but maybe the folks over there have some real work to do.   • A crowd of citizens (and city councilors) actually showed up to a public hearing to oppose Turnpike toll increases. [Boston Herald]
  • The narrow view of Allston she offers (frat parties, the late Mr. Butch, "crusting sidewalk vomit," great takeout options) wouldn't be too objectionable if it wasn't pierced by "...the uncomfortably frequent gunshots and occasional homicides, the strings of robberies, and having to turn three locks every night before going to sleep."

    --Boston University police have released a sketch (left) of a suspect in the robbery of a law student--"one of several recent attacks on young women near the BU campus." [Boston Herald]

    --The Commonwealth's fire marshall says that arson caused a fire that took out five businesses Tuesday in Northborough. 70 firefighters were needed to put down the flames. A five and dime that had been in operation for 50-plus years was among the casulties, which also included "an appliance store, a jeweler, a market and a bead shop." [Boston Herald]

    Update: The BU Free Press has a piece today entitled "Frat Brothers Try to Dispel Myths." Although we were expecting them to say they actually trash Radissons, not Days Inns, some of the nicer fraternity brothers explained that a few of them engage in philanthropy.
