Google is looking at property in the Boston area for a new hub in the Hub. The Herald reported earlier this week that Google was looking for 100,000 to 200,000 square feet of office space in either Boston or Cambridge to launch a new operations center on the East Coast. The rumors of the Google invasion have come to Bostonist via emails and our tipline – while we can't substantiate any of them the job...
Many a Broadway work has previewed in Boston before heading to the Great White Way -- and we strongly suggest that the musical announced this week follow suit. A Flaming Lips concert is in many respects a musical theatre event in and of itself. But there is buzz that the band will officially launch a Broadway venture with the help of a collaboration so bizarre that it just might be awesome: Aaron Sorkin. The fast-talking...
Map mash-ups have been around for what seems like forever. Geo-tagging for Flickr seems like it's been around for similar eons. Yet both are still new to the scene in the grand scheme of things – neither came around until after the tech bubble burst. They still amaze us. The tagged photos that appear on the loc.alize.us site seem to all be brilliant and appear on the satellite map in the location they were taken. We've experienced different load times in using the service, so be patient and wait for things to load.
Tom Brady is awfully busy even though the Pats lost to the Colts. He's a star witness, and he's been wooing Gisele Bundchen. The Globe wonders what the two have in common other than their superhuman bone structures, and they come up with right-wing politics:
Texas is thawing, the Northeast is freezing, and a sort of natural order seems almost restored to the Ist-A-Verse. Almost. Londonist HQ—that is to say, the city of London—was battered by heavy winds, making it a bad time to be a twelve-meter (nearly forty-foot) tall snowman. Still, not everyone decided to keep warmly covered. Meanwhile, back indoors, the Big Brother racism is now causing all kinds of headaches for international diplomats, and Londonist got into...
The tech bubble may be back. Or maybe it's not a bubble at all. Reddit (as in read – it) grew up as part of the Boston post-burst venture capital projects. Conde Nast just bought them. They're one of any number of link sharing sites allowing users to popularize blog entries and websites they find to be interesting and relevant. The back end software learns what you like by the way you vote on existing sites – TiVo for the interweb? Perhaps. Just about a year ago Reddit presented at the first (?) of what is now a monthly series Web Innovators meet-ups in Boston. The still informal series of meetings features self-funded and some venture capital based web sites and emerging technologies that hope to harness the wonders of the interweb.
Sometimes you need to clean yourself up, get serious, and move in with daddie for a few months before you head to Latin America for a new gig. The District bid's Jenna Bush adios. D.C.-based television shows have an elderly audience and DCist has some suggestions to fix that. They're also throwing Butterstick the panda bear a birthday bash. Yeah, we may have a few issues with our World Cup broadcasters here, but this...
For years, Spike's Junkyard Dogs has been serving up some of the best hot dogs and grilled chicken sandwiches in Allston (and apparently in many locations in Rhode Island, too). Bostonist is excited to share that recently, David Drake's "highly successful" fast food business (named after his bulldog, Spike), has opened another location on the corner of Mass Ave and Boylston (also, soon to come to Davis Square), in the space that used to house...
It's been a while since we've found a good Google map mash-up that we like. But in our unwavering passion for cartography and the recent upturn in our interest in looking skyward (well, the last two days – not this morning all full of rain) we are taking a look at two extra terrestrial mapping services. One actually maps the unidentified extra terrestrials as they've been spotted from the Earth, the other maps those hunks of junk we've purposefully sent into space to orbit the earth.
Venture capital, that risky investing that took a turn for the worse when the tech bubble burst with the new millennium, is backing Boston businesses again. Honestly, we’re not surprised. After making our way through a lengthy Boston Globe article on the Boston start-up blog directory, Gather.com, it’s abundantly clear that there is money to be had in the worlds of new technology. Gather has grabbed $6 mil. and they’re still running in Beta. But...
Well, Christmas is behind us (unless you are a serious twelve-days celebrator or from a country or culture that puts more emphasis on Kings Day (is that how you say it in English? Bostonist knows it as Día de Reyes from our days as BuenosAiresist)). (Also, if (like this Bostonist) you're not Christian, Christmas is, technically, behind you, but you don't care at all.) Now the portion of the year begins where cold weather progressively...
It is every Bostonian's nightmare: getting towed, and last night one Bostonist experienced it for the first time - me. This is my story.
No, it’s not just you who thinks that living in Boston isn’t cheap. A new report proves that it is hard to make ends meet here in the city; “The Housing Report Card” released by the Boston Foundation and the Citizen's Housing and Planning Association, announced today that Boston is indeed an expensive place to live, in fact the most expensive in the country. Yes, the city who ranked second in "Best for Singles" by Forbes Magazine this past year, has again beat out New York City, San Francisco and Washington D.C., but now it's in housing costs. A family of four in Boston needs over $64,000 to cover the most basic costs to live. (In comparison, a family of four in NYC needs $58,000.) The report points to Boston housing prices, which have increased so much that people’s incomes and housing production cannot keep up. Massachusetts is home to the highest housing prices and has been for the last 25 years; these high prices keep out younger would-be-buyers like Bostonist from ever being able to buy their own place. The report warns that younger residents blocked out from buying will start to move out-of-state in order to afford real estate.
The housing bubble claims another victim. Cambridge housing prices are still some of the highest in the area, especially for rentals. The owner of the building at 21 Brookline St., George Rothman, plans to take advantage of the market when he builds 46 apartments. New tenants will ultimately displace ManRay that makes its last hurrah this weekend before a final last call in the current location. The Weekly Dig asked this week "where will all...
This story starts with Curt Schilling commissioning a "custom" Harley Fat Boy with Red Sox logo for an ALS and melanoma research and patient care charity event. The hog went on sale way back in September 2004 and sold to Hill | Holiday. That was all before the Red Sox became World Champions for the first time in 86 years. To support the Sox and their favorite charities is one thing, but to do it...
Well, you know what they say - "That's why they play the games". BC came out to play in their last BIG EAST tournament as the #1 seed and with that title comes a nice big target on their backs. West Virginia came out to prove that they belong in the NCAA field of 65 and did so in a big way, going up on the Eagles by as much as 25 points at the beginning of the second half. BC managed to chop the lead down to something within striking distance, a mere 4 points, but never got any closer. The 25 points proved to be insurmountable. This victory for West Virginia will probably ensure that they come down off everyone's "Bubble Team" list (no, not that) and earn a rightful spot in the NCAA tourney as an at-large. That is, unless they win the BIG EAST tournament - then they're automatic.
