The Bruins are back tonight less than four months after winning the Stanley Cup and bringing it back to Boston. The summer-long Cup fun is over, the players got their much-earned rings - 505 people got rings, even Tomas Kaberle, we think - that are almost as big as the Cup. Okay, not quite.

The Boston Bruins (3-1-0) bring a three-game winning streak into TD Garden for tonight's home opener against the Washington Capitals at 7:00 p.m. The Bruins beat the Caps on Tuesday, 3-1.

Despite a promising 16-7 spurt to open the game, Atlanta's brash brand of confident basketball was too much for the Celtics to handle as the Hawks swept their way to a 100-91 win. Atlanta beat the Green three times in January to secure a season series sweep for the first time since 1998-99. Atlanta took over second place in the Eastern Conference with the win.
When Josh Beckett stomped off the mound after the fourth inning, he sure looked mad about something. Perhaps Beckett was realizing that he is done pitching against Atlanta for the balance of the 2009 season. Beckett (9-3) stopped the Braves cold, again, this time with seven shutout innings, six hits and six strikeouts as the Red Sox beat the Braves, 8-2. Beckett pitched 16 scoreless innings against Atlanta this year. Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Paplebon closed the game out. Both were adequate, at best, as Paplebon served up a home run to someone named David Ross, who exists and played eight games for Boston in 2008.

The Red Sox were at home, facing down the Oakland A's on Tuesday night, but everyone had one eye on events unfolding in Florida. And wouldn't you know? Things worked out perfectly. The drama-filled Oakland game (only in September would one be able to string those words together) was decisively won by Boston and featured numerous reasons for the Fenway crowd to stand up and cheer.
