Amid news that Boston has suffered worse inflation than other U.S. cities, we've also learned that the income gap in Massachusetts is getting bigger. The two phenomena are locked in a vicious cycle: as rich people spend more money, the cost of living goes up for the rest of us, who find it harder to send our children (or ourselves) to school, which limits our chances to earn greater incomes. It sucks for the rest......

Image of lobsters on the Cape by Chris Seufert from photos tagged "Bostonist" on Flickr. The First Baptist Church of Lynn was struck by lightning yesterday, which can only perpetuate the saying, "Lynn, Lynn, city of sin..." [Boston Herald] Although the incredibly buff (yet disabled) jake, Albert Arroyo, surmised he could avoid termination by not showing up to work; the Boston Fire Department is still kicking his gluteus maximus to the curb. This week, the Civil Society Institute released survey results that showed 82 percent of people in Massachusetts approved of Cape Wind, which would install wind turbines in Nantucket Sound. The news came out just as Cape Wind supporters were pushing for US Rep Ed "Biz" Markey to publicly back the project. {They are not lobbying Senator Ted Kennedy, who, in a fit of NIMBYism, has opposed the project from the get-go because Nantucket Sound is......

For the 99% of us who can't finagle/afford Red Sox tickets, it's nice to remember that the Cape Cod Baseball League exists just an hour or so south of us. A perennial waystation on the way to the big leagues (Mike Lowell, Jason Varitek and Kevin Youkilis are among current Sox who spent time there), the league's free admission, volunteer spirit and small-town feel make a great time machine to the fuzzy golden age of......

Update: Greenpeace sent out a statement regarding Cape Wind. Greenpeace approves, with a caveat: "While the review is positive, it does point out that Cape Wind needs to minimize the impacts to avian species. The assassination of Pakistan's former prime minister and opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has left many aghast at the chaos that is tearing Pakistan apart. Wonkette set up a "snark free zone" in response, writing of pictures taken at the scene: "… it makes all the backstabbing and machinations of our candidates trying to plant stupid rumors about drug use and out-of-wedlock babies and all the rest of it seem that much more nauseating and petty......

Cape Wind has already suffered delays galore as opponents figure out what else they can study about the wind farm in Nantucket Sound--and they've received another delay for Christmas. The United States Minerals Management Service, which has the authority to yay or nay the project, announced yesterday that it will delay its report on Cape Wind until next year, the AP reports. Even though contributions to the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, the project's main......

Despite the efforts of those who don't want wind turbines in Nantucket Sound, the Cape Wind project keeps coming back like a pissed-off zombie. Opponents may try to kill it, but Cape Wind springs back to life with continued vigor. Cape Wind opponents might want to bar the door this time because the AP has reported that contributions to the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound have dropped. The Alliance raised $2 million in 2006--a hefty......

Our Senators, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, are catching some heat for an earmark on a transportation bill designed to help prevent delays at airport hubs. The earmark is for $8 million, which is peanuts in guv'mint terms, but that $8 million isn't going to Logan--it's going to airports in Barnstable and Nantucket. And Barnstable and Nantucket are hardly "hubs." Money flowing into Massachusetts is a good thing, but an $8 million earmark for Barnstable......
