Rodfest is held each year to support the Greg "Rodney" Moynahan Memorial Scholarship. Moynahan, a musician who used to host "Rodfests" to celebrate his birthday, died in a car crash in 2004. Kier Byrnes, Moynahan's cousin and a member of Three Day Threshold, has continued the "Rodfest" tradition, and the money goes to Moynahan's alma mater, Stonehill College. Bands this year include Three Day Threshold, Girls Guns & Glory, Rogue Heroes, Cassavetes, and the Bowen Street Band. The Paradise, 8:00 pm. more ›

Today, some Massachusetts residents will be voting on a replacement for State Senator Jarrett Barrios, who left the Senate to make some bucks working for Blue Cross. The following candidates for his position are all Democrats: Timothy Flaherty - Former assistant DA and son of Charlie Flaherty, who used to be speaker of the Massachusetts House. Definitely has the most badass campaign photo. Also has the most endorsements (Globe, Cambridge Chronicle, Blue Mass Group). Anthony... more ›

Story time. It's early 2001 at a snowy New England college campus. Collegiate-Aged Bostonist takes in a set by San Francisco-based Matt Nathanson in the campus student center. It is Nathanson's birthday and Sister Helen Prejean (of "Dead Man Walking" fame) is also appearing on campus. Did we mention that this is a Catholic college? Nathanson winds up performing a very, very intimate two sets and, we imagine, having a pretty sucky birthday. But Bostonist... more ›

--A deadly car crash happened early this morning on Blue Hill Avenue. One person died, and three people, including a child and a baby, went to the hospital in critical condition. The baby was in a car seat, but it was thrown from the car. Road rage allegedly caused the crash, and police have arrested 28-year-old Jason Bailey. He is being charged with "Leaving the Scene Personal Injury, Leaving Scene resulting in One Death, Operating... more ›

--The shootings of five people, including a 9-year-old girl, that took place in two different places in Mattapan on Saturday night may be related. Commish Ed Davis, who has been especially busy lately, referenced possible gang activity. The 9-year-old got shot in the back. In sheer coincidence, one of the shootings interrupted yet another birthday party. We're not sure why birthday parties have gotten so dangerous, but some gun-toting, allegedly birthday-hating thug(s) popped off and... more ›

No games last night of local interest. So let's take a spin around the country to see what's going on in the rest of the sporting world. more ›

The Sox express train derailed last night, as the Jays finally solved Tim Wakefield en route to a 7-3 win. The culprits? Well, the first four guys in the lineup went 1-for-19. A doable 2-run deficit doubled in the 8th inning; Vernon Wells hit a rocket into center field. Wily Mo Pena looked more like Sily Mo Pena as the ball bounced over his outstretched glove and careened around for a triple. Aaron Hill then... more ›

With all that went down this week, we thought we thought we'd cheer everyone up by giving everyone a double dose of dogs. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions this week at DCist. Like the rest of country, we were floored by the news of so many dead coming out of Virginia Tech, and with so many of the victims and their relatives from the D.C. area, we felt it important to pay... more ›

Snowplows are supposed to be helpful, right? That all depends on who is behind the wheel. Yesterday morning, in the daytime, one of Boston's snowplows hit a 64-year-old woman who was standing in the crosswalk at I Street and East Broadway. Then the snowplow left the scene. The Globe called the incident a "hit-and-run" but a more accurate description would be "hit-and-plow-away-very-slowly." Strip joint - oops, "Gentlemen's Club" - Centerfolds saw the wrong kind of... more ›

Remember when Tom Reilly was just a run-of-the-mill, blowhard, establishment Democrat whose judgment we were starting to question because he used his office to do favors for friends (and possibly interfere with a criminal investigation along the way)? Bostonist does, and man, those were the days. Yesterday, when revelations of Marie St. Fleur's financial problems came to the fore, Bostonist was still willing to suppose that the AG could pull this thing out with a little creative spin. St. Fleur, apparently, did not have so much confidence, so the Lieutenant-Governor-candidate-for-a-day withdrew. Bringing Reilly back to where he started, except worse. more ›

Boy oh boy, AG Reilly's campaign for governor gets each day. First, there was the whole brouhaha over his calls to Worcester County DA John Conte to keep the wraps on details of a fatal car crash involving the daughters of one of Reilly's friends. Then Reilly surprised everyone yesterday by jilting Chris Gabrieli and Worcester Mayor Tim Murray and choosing Dorchester State Rep. Marie St. Fleur as his running mate. This morning, Bostonist learns from the papers (well, the Globe, anyway; we would have figured the Herald would be all over this) that St. Fleur is in a whole mess of financial trouble - she owes back taxes and student loans. This last revelation, though, might not be so bad for team Reilly as it first appears. more ›

. . . she looks at maps and sees people waving! And now, Google Maps brings that same effect to all of us. Bostonist, along with everyone else in the world who likes cool stuff, has told you lots of times about how Google Maps it the hottest thing since Susan Orlean's upstate New York weekend palace. Now we learn that it is even hotter than ever, because a couple new levels of zoom have been added to the satellite view (at least in cities, which is where it matters). Why is this so great? Well, to start with, we're pretty sure we can see our car, since it's pretty much always parked in the same place. We can also see with more vivd detail than ever before a B-line train, people playing basketball, and our old friend, the above-ground central artery. Lamentably, the satellite photos were taken on a day when the Sox were not at home (or maybe playing a night game), but there do appear to be people in the stands and cars in lot at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. If only we didn't have an actual day job and this blogging to do, Bostonist would spend all day combing the satellite pics for unusual stuff. That said, we'll buy a beer for the first person (of legal drinking age, of course) who can find us a Google Maps picture of a car crash anywhere in the Commonwealth. more ›

Bostonist can hardly open the paper these days without seeing another story about Attorney General Tom Reilly's intervention in the investigation of a car crash in Southboro. Our first inclination was to tune the whole thing out and wait for it to blow over, but with each passing day, we fall further and further behind - we're getting the feeling that some time soon, we're going to find ourselves needing to know and totally unprepared, like that time in our senior year of high school we wrote a detective story on the back of our Trig. test because we didn't know any of the answers (Sorry, Mrs. Doulis). So, we decided to go back over the news and brush up on Drunken-teen-car-crash-gate (yeah, we hate the -gate suffix, but it's fun when you stick it on something long and unwieldy). more ›

Today is a sad day in Red Sox nation -- J.P. Villamen, the Spanish-language voice of the Sox died in a car crash yesterday on his way home to Lawrence from Yankee Stadium. One of the first Spanish language broadcasters in the Majors, Villamen had been with the team since the 1995 season. His announcing was broadcast throughout the Spanish-speaking world, across the United States and Latin America in places like Nicaragua and his native Dominican Republic. His signature moment came just last year, after the historic World Series victory: more ›
