Two of Boston's best pro athletes were on display on Friday with mixed results. Preseason 2009 for the New England Patriots can be summed up in two words: Tom Brady. Is he ready to play after missing the entire 2008 season? Is he risking injury by playing too much in games that don't count? We'll get back to the injurry question.

Sports Redux: Trades, Homers, and a W

On a day when an actual game was overshadowed by front office moves and clubhouse goodbyes, the Red Sox managed to win anyway. Justin Masterson, Adam LaRoche and two minor-league arms left the Nation in order to bring back Casey Kotchman and Victor Martinez as Theo Epstein was active again at the trading deadline. Martinez is in Boston possibly because of one word: versatility. Theo says he can hit, catch and play first base. Kotchman is supposedly a defensive upgrade over LaRoche. Theo may have created a few headaches for Terry Francona, though.

It was a virtual tie trying to pick which movie we were going to use today to compare the Red Sox to. All About Eve, with its famous line, "Fasten your seatbelts; it's going to be a bumpy night", got the nod over Deep Impact, which we considered because of all those scenes where President Morgan Freeman has to address the nation and tell everyone that the nukes and the missiles have failed, and the...

The stage was set perfectly. Curt Schilling was making his comeback, adding the final link to the Sox' solid rotation. He pitched very well, had good stamina, gave fans confidence...but didn't win the game. Oops. Schill went six-plus, and kept the Anaheim bats in check for the most part. Casey Kotchman singled in two runs in the fourth, which could have been avoided if Curt had been quicker on the draw to cover a double-play...
