This Bostonist hates brunch. Hates it. He has no idea what would possess so many thousands of people, of otherwise sound mind, to wait in 20-person-long lines only to pony up anywhere between $12 and $20 to buy food that cost a restaurant a buck fifty in the first place and that you could totally cook at home.

Who doesn't love melted cheese? La Papusa Guanaca is a small restaurant on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain that focuses on the food of El Salvador, including the delicious, hot and melty papusa. The little crispy corn pancakes ($1.25), about the size of your palm, are stuffed with cheese, cheese and pork, or cheese and beans, and then fried on a griddle. They're really hot, though, when they come out, so save yourself from a burn and wait a minute before eating.

The point of the holidays is to give as much as you receive, and tonight's chosen events (plus one announcement) have the giving spirit in mind.

Today the Globe ran a piece on Jackson Square. Void from the coverage was any mention of "cultural center," ample coverage was given to "crime stricken area." Bostonist loves us some ice cream. We're too lazy (and full of ice cream) to find the statistic that says New Englanders eat more ice cream than anyone else in the nation. We're pretty sure that our winter intake of creamy deliciousness tops the summer consumption of other parts of the country. Are we proud? Yes. We've got our share of local chains and independent parlors to find our tasty treats – and Jamaica Plain-based J.P. Licks has come out with some internationally inspired new flavors to treat us before summer officially ends.

The Boston Globe reports today on an initiative by some local Latin American groups that is gaining support among some city officials. The City is considering renaming a portion of Centre Street in Jamaica Plain "Avenue de las Americas. At-Large City Council member Felix Arroyo, and Boston's first Hispanic council member, was named in the report as a supporter of the proposal. The idea is to give recognition to the portion of Centre Street between Jackson Square and Hyde Square to reflect the Latin American culture that is now in the majority in that area. Local shops, from bodegas and restaurants to record stores and clothing shops are owned by ethnic Latin Americans. The City's Main Streets program has begun to refer to the area as "the Latin Quarter." But some are hoping for official recognition in the form of a renaming of the street to reflect the culture of the area.

No one likes bike-related head injuries less than Bostonist. Last fall we had an unfortunate run-in with the unused trolley tracks on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain. Riding at a too-shallow angle to the tracks, our front tire jammed in the groove and we were rudely and rapidly sent over the handlebars and onto our head. Banged up but generally intact, we were helped to our feet by kindly passersby, and, after a brief self-inspection, got back on our bicycle and continued on our way. Almost immediately, however, it became clear that we did not know our destination, our current location, our place of employment, or for that matter, anything else.
