  • Photo of the Day, August 13, 2009: Gondola

Mike Cialowicz has a black and white that would look great on any art collector's wall. This image has some great tones while not being overly contrasty. It's easy to see that there's a wonderful story contained within this photo.

Photo of the Day, July 29, 2009: Charles River HDR

We don't often have an HDR make photo of the day since the topic seems to polarize the photographic community, but Iceburns has one that we thought had the right mix of composition and tone mapping. Taking 3 hand held exposures and blending them into an HDR, this shot gives great color in the rocks and water, while keeping the sky from getting blown out.

In a slightly belated honor of our country's birthday, we thought we'd bring you a few of our favorite fireworks shots from Saturday. All of these shots and more can be found in our Bostonist Flickr Pool.

Photo of the day, July 2, 2009: A Slice of Red

.laz seems to have put himself into the right place at the right time to get a terrific sunset picture of Boston. As the name implies, the slice of red nicely covers the city as blues and browns dominate the sky and water. The clouds are full of texture and substance, while the sailboats are a great addition to the Charles.

Photo of the Day, June 12, 2009: The Charles River

atomicjeep has today's Film Friday shot. This Esplanade shot was taken on Fuji Superia and has great tonal qualities. The photo also has some natural vignetting which helps with the framing. What we love most about this photo however are the reflections in the foreground and the soft waves on the water.

After a year of work to fix a "support beam in need of immediate repair," the Department of Conservation and Recreation reopens the upstream sidewalk on the Longfellow Bridge today, fully reopening the bridge to pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the first time in forever. The best news? The Longfellow will be open for the Charles River fireworks show this July 4th. The Commonwealth has spent more than $12.5 million since August, 2007 to fix the bridge. [DCR Press release]

Tom and Gisele rented kayaks, Tom's flipped over and he allegedly had to be rescued. New England's fun couple got their boats from Community Boating before running into trouble in the Charles River. Is the kayak up for sale on E-bay yet? Note to Community Boating: This is the best thing to ever happen to you!

Photo of the Day, June 5, 2009: Bliss

atomicjeep took this shot along the Charles. It's a great Film Friday throwback taken on Fuji Superia. The tranquility of the scene is pleasing, and it certainly makes us want to skip out on work and go relax by the water.

Photo of the Day, March 30, 2009: Warning Sign

Perhaps it's the warmer weather but we're finding more and more great photos in our flickr group pool. I'd like to take a moment to ask everyone on flickr to check out the pool, as there are lots of great photographs there that don't make it on to the Bostonist site.

Boston Blotter: Shooting in JP, Stabbing in Dorchester

-- A man was found shot Saturday night on McBride Street in Jamaica Plain. The 20-year-old suffered life threatening injuries. Police have made no arrests and have hinted at no motive for the shooting. [BPDNews]

Jeff Tamagini also took some super photos of the Head of the Charles Regatta yesterday. If you missed yesterday's event, here's what it looked like. Today's last races start at 4, so you still have plenty of time to get down to the river before it's all over. (Side note: We're pretty sure we saw some of Jeff's photos on the walls at Lower Depths while watching the game there last night. Head there tonight if you'd like some art to accompany your baseball and beer.)

Here's a slideshow of awesome Head of the Charles photos taken by our pal Paul Keleher on Flickr. Get the race results from the event website.

An animal alleged to be Loch Ness Monster was spotted by a group on a Boston Duck Tour yesterday. An observer of the incident provided the following drawing of the encounter. An area paleontologist, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the Bostonist in an exclusive interview that, "the positioning of the flippers, combined with the angle of the jawbone, leads me to believe that the creature represented in the meticulously executed, true-to-life drawing is most likely Nessiteras rhombopteryx. However," she added, "I would need to see the dorsal posterior aspect of the body to confirm these findings."

Fireworks lit up the skies of Greater Boston last night. From our perch on the Mass. Ave. bridge, we saw four fireworks displays, including the grandest of them all, the Boston Pops extravaganza. (The other three appeared to be in Newton, Somerville(?), and South Boston.)

Sunday morning, more than 100 swimmers left the River Dock on the Esplanade, under the watchful eye of the Arthur Fiedler bust, for a mile-long race in the Charles River. Swimming in the Charles: it's a phrase that would make most Bostonians cringe. But, for the Charles River Swimming Club, who hosted Sunday's race, it's a matter of pride.

Be prepared to take a long lunch break tomorrow. Mayor Menino has announced that Red Sox celebration festivities will begin tomorrow at noon. Bostonist watched the WBZ webcast of Mayor Menino giving the details. The players will be riding in duck boats in a repeat of 2004's "rolling rally." Menino said that the parade will follow the same route as it did in 2004. Here's an image of last year's route from the Globe....

If you've always dreamed of owning a swanky Back Bay condo overlooking the Charles River Esplanade, you might get your big chance soon. All you'll need to do is stock up on the earplugs and fun-tak.

Now that a partially dissolved piece of sodium metal has been deemed the culprit in the burning of several Charles River cleanup volunteers, the local news is playing up the MIT ritual known as the "sodium drop."

Update: Our anonymous commenter is likely correct! The substance that burned the crew was solid sodium, which MIT pranksters like to drop into the Charles for orientation.

Despite the blooms of blue-green algae spotted in the Charles, the Charles River Swimmers were able to hold their one-mile swim Saturday morning. The top overall winner was Sebastian Neumayer, and the top female finisher was Emily Sutliff. The swimmers started at the River Dock, and swam for one mile between Harvard and Longfellow Bridges. The race had been cancelled last year thanks to an abundance of algae. The Globe notes that the organizers...

The Armenian Memorial, a proposed park, would pay homage to the Armenian Genocide that saw the loss of an estimated 1.5 million lives in 1915. The memorial has been on and off in the news mostly for their intention to develop a parcel of the Greenway near Christopher Columbus park as the site of the memorial. Tom Menino has voiced his opinion: no way. He doesn't want the Greenway to become home to a number...

--A man has been sentenced to two years in jail for threatening a teenager with a hatchet after fighting over a pump position at a Revere gas station, according to a release from the DA's office. The message? Rein in your temper, especially if there's a sharp object nearby. That goes for hatchets and machetes. DA Daniel Conley said in a classic understatement, "The decision to keep a hatchet in one’s vehicle is bizarre, but...
