You may read in the papers that the Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin expects low turnout for the Democratic primary on September 19, but damn it, Bostonist is still excited. We've told you before about the three democratic candidates for governor, but did you know there's a whole raft of other nominations up for grabs in both parties? Oh yes indeed!

Over the weekend, the Commonwealth held its collective breath as the state democratic party held its annual convention. Everyone was wondering: Will it be Deval Patrick, Tom Reilly, or Chris Gabrieli? And the answer is . . . yes. Under party rules, a candidate needs 15% of delegates to secure a place on the primary ballot in September, and all three men did so.

Hey, remember the governor's race? It's still as inscrutable as ever. Just as jilted, wealthy, almost-lieutenant-governor-candidate-for-the-Democrats Chris Gabrieli is now trying to run on his own, disgruntled, wealthy Republican Christy Mihos is entering the race as an independent. Republican frontrunner Kerry Healey is naturally peeved, as she had hoped Mihos would vie with her (and ultimately lose) in the primary. What Bostonist can't understand is what, precisely, Mihos brings to the table that will attract voters from Healey.

The funny thing about Massachusetts politics, Bostonist has found, is that even when we are distracted by exciting stuff like the repatriation of accused murderers/internet smut-peddlers/would-be patrons of escort services, the internecine squabbles keep cooking along. Boy oh boy, AG Reilly's campaign for governor gets each day. First, there was the whole brouhaha over his calls to Worcester County DA John Conte to keep the wraps on details of a fatal car crash involving the daughters of one of Reilly's friends. Then Reilly surprised everyone yesterday by jilting Chris Gabrieli and Worcester Mayor Tim Murray and choosing Dorchester State Rep. Marie St. Fleur as his running mate. This morning, Bostonist learns from the papers (well, the Globe, anyway; we would have figured the Herald would be all over this) that St. Fleur is in a whole mess of financial trouble - she owes back taxes and student loans. This last revelation, though, might not be so bad for team Reilly as it first appears.
