An important member of the Red Sox returns tonight. No, not Youk. The CITGO sign gets lit back up during the seventh-inning stretch of tonight's Sox game against Toronto. Two months ago, the sign was turned off in order to replace older light bulbs with brighter, "greener" ones. If you were wondering, the Sox were 29-23 while the sign was on the DL. Bostonist hopes our math is correct. more ›

Bostonist learned earlier that opening day for the Red Sox has been postponed until tomorrow due to rain, but that doesn't mean we aren't already psych'd up. Local photog Chris Devers took an "Opening Day Eve" tour of Fenway and took this photo of the beloved Citgo Sign. Hopefully this will help with the anticipation of tomorrow's big day. more ›

Today is truck day Red Sox nation, that day of the year when the Red Sox move to Florida and you know that Spring is near. And when we think Red Sox, we think the Citgo Sign. This capture by md91180 happened almost by accident, almost. This shot takes an iconic Boston landmark and gives it a twist. We love the colors and simplicity of the framing, as well as the small reflections in all of the larger raindrops. Well done!

Tonight, vampires ditch their fangs for dentures of the undead whist acting like witches, and ghosts disguise themselves as bats disguised as rabbits. Be not surprised if even the Citgo sign in Kenmore Square shines just a teensy but more orange than usual this night. more ›

The Citgo sign, Boston's favorite 60-foot-tall advertisement, caught on fire this afternoon according to news reports. The sign, which served thousands as a distraction during last night's tedious Fenway Park home run derby, suffered some structural damage. [WCVB] more ›

After Dunkin' Donuts was going to take down its legendary sign in Brighton, the question arose--what next? What are the options if you want to make sure that Dunkin' Brands Inc. doesn't put anything boring or ugly in its place? more ›

WGBH held a ribbon-cutting yesterday morning to commemorate its new studio space in Brighton. After president Henry Becton cut a bright orange ribbon in front of a stage inside the complex, a digital mural along the side of the building facing the pike made its debut. The gigantic, 30-by-45-foot mural might outdo the Citgo sign, which can be always seen looming over the city. Anyone driving east on the Pike will be able to see... more ›

The Phoenix posted the tenth annual Muzzle Awards. The listing, compiled by Media Nation blogger Dan Kennedy, showcases the offenses against free speech by local individuals and organizations. An apropos way to celebrate liberty for the Fourth of July. He gets the Muzzle this year by stifling the free speech of former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami by refusing to provide state-police protection to the visiting former head of state. Boston Police stepped up to provide... more ›

Bostonist spent a long weekend with our friends at Seattlest in their fair city. It was our first trip out to the Pacific Northwest’s very own city of neighborhoods. We were looking for similarities with Boston when we were there. The obvious similarity hangs high above their downtown: we’ve got the Citgo Sign, they’ve got the Pepsi Sign. Unlike our Citgo, their Pepsi changes the neon every time the Pepsi logo changes, we were told it’s not always big neon. We took in the sights and hopped on the Monorail. Ok, we didn’t. And just when we thought the T was bad we learn that the two historic cement tracks tracing a short length from Seattle Center to the heart of Downtown haven’t been carrying the monorail since they met collided at the “pinch point.” Progress has since been hampered on the monorail expansion project. more ›

If this description of a book doesn't intrigue you, you have to be dead: Rachel Dewoskin went to China to work for an American PR firm and ended up as a Chinese soap opera star. She was the sexy American vixen on Foreign Babes In Beijing, the subject of her new book. Please ignore the very Sex and The City-aping cover; Columbia grad Ms. Dewoskin is an assistant poetry editor for BU's literary magazine AGNI and a writer, and the book's going to be interesting, funny, and sociological! Come see her read tonight at 7PM at the BU Bookstore below the Citgo sign. If your tastes lean more towards ye olde Victorian novels of intrigue and ambiguous sexuality, have tons of fun with songwriter Wesley Stace, nee John Wesley Harding, a British hottie of sound mind and song who's written a well reviewed first novel, Misfortune. You can drink with him at 7PM at Newtonville Books' venerable Books and Brew series, and hey, if you get him talking, maybe there'll be singing too! Get your knowledge on and meet some attractive writers. (Bostonist feels the need to mention that fact if it will get you out of the house!) more ›

Lance Morrow teaches a class at BU on "The American Presidency", and it's one of those classes that is always talked about and whispered about and a hot ticket for a semester. Bostonist has had the pleasure of having Mr. Morrow in class and he's an insightful and fascinating guy, one of those teachers who has stories to tell. When he's not teaching at BU, he writes cover stories, essays, and book reviews for Time Magazine and he's published several books. Tonight he's talking about his latest book, The Best Year Of Their Lives: Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon in 1948: Learning The Secrets Of Power. This book has already recieved strong reviews in The Boston Globe and The New York Times, and it should be an incisive look at three future presidents as young congressmen in 1948 and how these events shaped their rise to power. Superficially, it's kind of like that WB show Jack and Bobby. Morrow is a lively writer, who, if Bostonist remembers correctly "has had dinner with all the presidents" and he should be giving a great talk. So go to 5th floor of the BU Barnes and Noble (under the Citgo sign) at 7PM and learn about the American presidency for free! more ›

Since 1940, the Citgo sign in Kenmore Square has become a fixture in the Boston skyline. Despite being dark much of the winter, a new and improved Citgo Sign will be ready for Red Sox opening day and will flash when a home run is hit. Repairs were delayed until after the World Series. more ›
