Good news, penniless folk fans: badass Boston folk musician Mieka Pauley kicks off a national tour this week with three shows in Boston, and two of them are free. If you're not already down with Pauley, whose throaty, tough, stripped-down songs form the perfect counterpoint to the overproduced, overwrought studio stuff that passes for "folk" these days, this is your chance to check her out alongside some other talented acts.

--Normally, Bostonist commends the Brattle for its impeccable taste in movies, but they are boldly venturing into stinker territory with the Lindsay Lohan polefest I Know Who Killed Me. Two audience members stood out at Josh Ritter's October show in Somerville: the drunk Irishman who preferred to be escorted our rather than sit down, and the man who soberly and repeatedly called out, Play your old stuff. Mention “music festival” this weekend and the hipster friends may immediately presume you’re talking about Austin City Limits. Out hipster them and clarify that Boston, in fact, has its own music festival in the brew this weekend: N.E.S.T. (North East Sticks Together). A series of 30+ (mostly music related) events at 6 venues over 7 days, N.E.S.T. spans all genres, deeming itself “a solid cross sampling of local artists.” Though N.E.S.T. claims that it isn't a music festival, it more or less is. Four friends got together, made some calls and made it happen. The Boston Phoenix added a sponsorship and thus, we arrive at a week of DIY musical merriment. Bostonist, admittedly, knows very little of the bands slated to play; fortunately, both the Phoenix and N.E.S.T. mastermind Dan have put together solid recommendations. Bostonist's usual yard sale attendance has been way down this season, what with the rain and all, but that just means we have more money to drop at the fifth annual Punk Rock Flea Market this Saturday. From noon to six, Mass Art's gym turns into a crafty wonderland, with local record labels, screenprinters, and crafty citizens selling their original creations for the masses. Oh, and they have DJ's and a raffle for a Beck-decorated bike (proceeds go the Kirsten Malone Fund). We're just hoping to find more Edward Gorey magnets this year.
