The apocalypse is nigh in the Ist-a-verse. LAist reported that the world ends on May 21. Bostonist reported on Brigham and Women’s Hospital giving a man a new face. And, Shanghaiist revealed China has issues with Bill Shakespeare. Remember to follow Bostonist on Twitter and like us on Facebook.

On Monday's Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert's "Threat Down" bit touched on the Cambridge's decision to honor a Muslim holiday by closing for one day beginning next year. As expected Colbert's satirical punditry poked fun at the controversy.
Boston University religion professor Stephen Prothero was on the Colbert Report last Monday, June 14, to promote his new book, God Is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions That Run the World—and Why Their Differences Matter. In discussing the "problems" that religions grapple with, Prothero told his fellow Steve that "In Hinduism, the problem is we keep getting reborn over and over and over again, and that is horrible." Rajan Zed, an On Faith panelist and president of the Universal Society of Hinduism (which doesn't appear to exist anywhere online, or maybe anywhere outside of Zed's head and press releases), was offended by Prothero's use of the word "horrible" (though it was basically prompted by Colbert [update: and not directed toward Hinduism at all]) and wants to clarify that the cycle of rebirth in Hinduism is meant to give us a chance to continually progress toward liberation.
Philip Glass helps write a war song for the Colbert Nation. Should Scott or Martha have commissioned him to do a campaign theme?
WGA Strike Support Rally Friday, December 14, 12:00 pm-3:00 pm Harvard Square Fans4writers.com Update: Bradley's Almanac just gave us a heads-up--the WGA East announced "Please RSVP to 212-767-7843 and leave the number of people in your party" if you plan to attend the event at the church. By now, we're all sick of the writers' strike, and Bostonist HQ is suffering from MCRW (Major Colbert Report Withdrawal). Rest assured, the writers are even sicker of...
The Apples in Stereo will be at the Middle East Downstairs tonight at 8:00 pm.
Mort Sahl will perform at Jimmy Tingle's Off Broadway Theater on Thursday night. For more information, go to Jimmy Tingle's website. All shows are at 7:30 pm. Without Mort Sahl, there would be no Daily Show or Colbert Report. James Wolcott at Vanity Fair went so far as to suggest that Sahl was more important to American comedy than Lenny Bruce. Whether or not that's true, Sahl laid the foundation for today's political satire. He...
This week we'd like to congratulate the -ist network's Mother Hen, Gothamist's Jen Chung, who found herself a recipient of Wired Magazine's Wired Rave Award. If that doesn't sound terribly exciting, keep in mind another recipient was J.K. Rowling. Yep, that's right, the -ist network and Harry Potter now have something in common. Go us. Austinist has a chat with the ever-fashionable Golden Girl Rue McClanahan, and managed to catch some local fashionistas making...
With the warmer weather, we found ourselves thinking of ice cream. Of course, we could always go for Toscanini's or JP Licks, but we've been waiting for a treat to show up in our grocery freezer - the Stephen-Colbert-inspired Ben & Jerry's flavor "AmeriCone Dream."
Boston-born Sumner Redstone is everywhere, from The Colbert Report to MGH. Just recently, the Viacom chair made a $35-million-dollar donation to the MGH burn center. Rich people make donations all the time, but there's a reason for the mogul's gift. We knew that the 1979 Copley Plaza Hotel fire damaged Redstone's hand, the appearance of which gave rise to much speculation over at Gawker. The injuries he sustained in that fire nearly killed him, as...
We've embedded this super long above discussion from Google Video here because the real video stream from the KSG presentation is being finicky and we'd have to upgrade our flash player to actually see the clips on the Comedy Central Colbert page.
Perhaps not a huge fan of Clay, Bostonist is a fan of the contest. We, and we think you, like free stuff and that feeling of being special. We were reminded today of the Bon Jovi show that we gave away a pair of tickets to back in mid-October (congrats Pyng, enjoy the show!). The concert sold out for the Garden pretty quickly, but looking out the window today we think there may be a few no shows and some scalpers with tickets discarded by North Shore Bon Jovi fans who will make the wise decision not to make it into the city for the show. We don’t encourage scalping, but if you really want to see the show, check the ‘list, or hang out in North Station and see what you can find.
