It's almost graduation: you know, that time when the city is flooded with parents, graduates, and moving trucks as everyone prepares to move to their new job and city—or, in this economy, back in with the 'rents. What happened over the past year at the big (and small) schools around town? Bostonist looks back at some news stories, from Harvard's billion-dollar losses to Emerson's Holocaust insensitivity, and provides graduation information as well, including commencement speakers, in which category Berklee blows everybody away. In a highly scientific study, the often useful BostonTweet named Emerson and BU the most active local schools on Twitter. The study was conducted by asking people who tweets the most. Makes sense, we suppose. Emerson students, grads, and profs pulled out their self-promotion skills to tie for the top spot. Tufts got a fair number of mentions, and a few people pointed out that Suffolk is on Twitter as well. We're a little surprised that high-tech MIT isn't the Massachusetts Institute of Twitter, but maybe the folks over there have some real work to do. Who do you think tweets the most and best in Boston, collegiate or otherwise?

Massachusetts in general, and Boston in particular, is famous for having dozens of colleges and hundreds of thousands of college students. But do we fund them well? The Globe reports that our state is stingier than most when it comes to financial aid. We offer only $83 million in aid as opposed to the $273 offered by South Carolina--hardly known for its institutes of higher education. We offer half the national average of aid as a percentage of costs, covering less than 5% of the cost of attending schools. We also devote half the national average of our higher education budget to financial aid. And all these statistics refer to public funding, meaning they don't even take into account the much higher prices of the many private schools in Massachusetts. What's a poor kid to do? Not go to school in Massachusetts, it seems.

A tipper left notice yesterday that another Massachusetts college campus found "threatening notes" in the school bathrooms. After notes appeared at Bridgewater State and Framingham State, a janitor found notes in UMass-Amherst bathrooms.

--An update on the murder of Daniel Yakovleff, who was stabbed to death in Dorchester. The lawyer for the man who owned the apartment in which Yakovleff died says that the BPD no longer considers the owner a suspect and that they are looking for a third man who may be involved with the crime. However, the BPD is saying that the owner is still a "person of interest." Police are still trying to find out how Yakovleff went from the Eagle bar in the South End to the Dorchester apartment. The Sustainable Endowments Institute, which is based in Cambridge, has published its second annual College Sustainability Report Card. The Institute issues grades for schools in several green-friendly fields: Administration, Climate Change & Energy, Food & Recycling, Green Building, Transportation, Endowment Transparency, Investment Priorities, and Shareholder Engagement. We're eagerly waiting to see how our local NCAA matchups shake out. Boston College takes on Texas Tech and Bobby Knight tomorrow, and Holy Cross faces off against Southern Illinois on Friday. In the other big college basketball tournament, the NIT, the UMass Minutemen defeated Alabama in overtime 89 to 87. They'll advance into the next round to play West Virginia. The findings of a scientific study recently asserted that this nation's college students are really into themselves. Since Boston is flush with colleges, this would mean the city is absolutely drunk on narcissism during the school year.
