Sure, our team may have been unceremoniously thrown out of the playoffs. We may be getting older, showing weaknesses, and be in for a few years of uncertainty and anxiety. But for a few hours, last night, it didn't matter that the Patriots were firmly in the middle of the NFL pack, because we got to watch the Colts unravel on national TV on the game's biggest stage.

Sure, the Colts just did the world a great service by not inflicting the Jets and their fans on the Super Bowl. But you can't root for the Colts. You just can't. Even if we're grudgingly acknowledging Peyton Manning's clutch performance, and saw coach Caldwell kind of almost crack a smile, we just can't.
The Patriots, we learned last week, call these "Hats and Shirts Day". They're the days when the team clinches something, in this case finally locking down the AFC East, and everyone on the club gets commemorative hats and T-shirts proclaiming them division champions. The way the Pats looked yesterday, and the way the NFL has become completely insane, it's not crazy to think there might be more hats and shirts in the near future, is it?
In ten years prowling the Patriots' sidelines, Bill Belichick has earned all kinds of trust and goodwill and benefit-of-the-doubt. Which is good, because he needs it this morning.
Remember a couple of weeks ago, when Claude Julien said he was getting tired of hard-fought losses? Well, last night must have exhausted him.

Last night was the first time this year, and the first time in years, that the Pats went out and truly beat themselves. And spoiled what was mostly a fantastic football game.
"We want to be greedy," said Claude Julien. And why not? After successively blanking the Oilers and the Canucks on 1-0 scored, the Bruins were hungry and ready to go for the Western Canadian sweep in Calgary. And when Patrice Bergeron caught Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff out of position for the quick 1-0 lead, Coach Julien's green looked like it might be rewarded.
Thanks to the Freedom Of Information laws and the PATRIOT Act, we were able to petition the federal government to listen in on last night's weekly Manning Family phone call. Here's a sample:
