Given that there were no local games to be had on Tuesday evening, we here at Bostonist wanted to dig below the surface, uncover some little-known facts about the local sports scene and its ripple effect. And did we* come up with some gems for you! -- Mike Ditka Doesn't Like the Pats! As we mentioned Tuesday afternoon, Ditka spoke out after Sunday's Pats win and said that Tom Brady was as wrong for acknowledging...

Bostonist had been holding out with the hopes that tickets to tonight's game would magically fall out of the sky, but we're finally accepting the fact that that's not going to happen. What to do? Live Blog, of course! We here at Bostonist HQ are going to be online and posting about the game in real time tonight, beginning around 8 p.m. We'll be offering up our running commentary and we encourage you to join...

Last night, Bostonist was on hand for J. Cannibal's screening of The Evil Dead at Brookline's Coolidge Corner Theater, and it was terrible. We expected the film to be bad, but our fellow patrons were even worse. One group drowned out the film's soundtrack with an eighty-five minute long running commentary that was so violent and misogynist that one female patron felt unsafe exiting the theater. Now, Bostonist understands the value of yelling at...

NESN asks the question, "Will the poetry in the field spark romance in the stands?" Perhaps - but the first episode of Sox Appeal suggests that if you really want to woo someone, you're better off doing it without the distractions of a baseball game. Garrett Lucash, a retired figure skater who will apparently do anything to banish the stereotype of the male figure skater, meets with three different women. He tries to strike...

This dog knows you don't have to be a reader to enjoy the action at the local news stand. Photo taken in Harvard Square by bodhisoma. Photo from bodhisoma, commentary from BonnieB....

"This stunning black and white photo from Bodhisoma uses stark contrast to create an abstract marvel. The shot was taken as he emerged from one of the Boston tunnels...perhaps the bright white is the "light at the end of the tunnel" and eventual completion of the Big Dig? Nah, probably not." photo from bodhisoma, commentary from korrileigh04...

"Sometimes summer in New England is about a lazy day near the water. This duck thinks so. (This is my photo and no, I did not stage it. The duck was really there. Honest.)" Photo and commentary from B.G. Lewandowski. --Don't forget, entries are due by monday for our photo of the day editor contest!...

"This is one of my photos I took sometime last week during a magical sunset at Copley Square. The light there during that time of day is really intense, and you would never think it." Photo and commentary from trevorpower....

We missed it last week when BostonNOW published a story about a city ordinance proposed by City Councilor Chuck Turner to outlaw the sale of crack pipes in convenience stores. Yeah, that's right, prohibit the sale of crack pipes. Massachusetts already has pretty strong laws against the sale of drug paraphernalia. The restrictions force prices up in those Boston area stores that do stock those odd looking tobacco delivery devices, and local college students to...

You know what's up. You know that O.A.R. is not to be referred to as "oar." You remember listening to that version of "Hey Girl" that you got off of Napster way before you heard the tune on the radio, and you've enjoyed the Maryland band's shows at spots all around town. So are you going to take in O.A.R. on the big screen tonight? Boston will be one of 15 cities to screen "Behind...

Zeitgeist Stage Company is rolling through a zinger of a play with "Valhalla," the wit-drenched Paul Rudnick play underway within the Boston Center for the Arts. Two hours have passed by quickly, as Zeitgeist's six-member cast has deftly brought more than 20 laughter-inducing characters from two time periods, to a simple and adaptable stage. The work is frothy fun, but then Rudnick's work throws the company a curve ball. Were "Valhalla" to end 10 minutes...

--On Saturday, a 17-year-old in South Boston had a little house party for his friends when his aunt was out of town. That wouldn't be a huge problem were it not for the "numerous bottles of empty alcohol containers" spotted by the BPD. The officers called the aunt, who said that she did leave the 17-year-old in charge of her house, but that didn't give him the right to party it up. The BPD's headline...

Forget small talk or introductions. Mike Daisey hasn't the time. There are 90 minutes available to him to weave New York, subways, family, borscht and 9/11 into "Invincible Summer," the monologue now making its New England premiere at the Zero Arrow, and he's bursting at the seams with information. So, instead, he immediately begins to tell American Repertory Theatre patrons about his wedding. With this comes Daisey's assumption that his audience -- presented with Daisey,...

You might think you've seen it all on YouTube or by watching Web Junk 2.0, but Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher are connoisseurs of filmed oddities. These two have been digging through stray videotapes and a few Dumpsters since they were teenagers, and you won't believe what they've found. They'll be sharing their treasures with the masses tomorrow night, Saturday, March 31, at midnight at Coolidge Corner Theater. Tickets are $9.50. If you think you've...

Jonathan Lethem will be reading from You Don't Love Me Yet at Coolidge Corner (via Brookline Booksmith) on Tuesday, March 27, at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $2. Jonathan Lethem's raked in awards galore, and you'd think he'd try to top himself in scope of subject matter and heavy meaning with each book. Instead, he turns to the little world of a no-name band trying to make it in Los Angeles, and he continues to stake...

We are loving us some Tim Thomas. The Bruins' goalie saved the day and helped the Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6 to 3. Keep playing like that, fellas, and we can start entertaining hopes that one of our pro sports teams will wind up in a playoff. Maybe? It's time for the Bruins to get serious with the trade deadline coming up in a week. The Globe's Fluto Shinzawa is speculating that Marco Sturm...

After one man turned up dead in Mount Hope Cemetery, the BPD reports that a 19-year-old man was found shot in Roxbury. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. More details are emerging about the dead man found above ground at the cemetery. He was in his 20s, and he was found naked. (Someone didn't want to leave evidence?) Police are thinking he was "killed elsewhere and dumped." The DSS might be in trouble in...

Bostonist is by no means immune to the pseudo-historical un-period pieces opening this weekend, Marie Antoinette and The Prestige, or to the less new but equally pretty Illusionist (now at our favorite theater for cheap matinees) and Camille (it's like Moulin Rouge, but with character development). But today we'd like to draw your attention to a documentary about an obscure local band called the Pixies and to the abundance of short film collections being offered...

In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. Friday 10/06 Jesus Camp Ted Haggard, megapastor of Colorado Springs' New Life megachurch, has megacondemned this unflinching documentary (horror movie, for Cantabrigians), possibly because pentecostalism could freak out potential megachurchgoers, or possibly because Ted Haggard is in it and he comes off as megacreepy. Opening...

We got excited back when the acceptance letter came in. We were again enthused when Alex decided to come to MIT. Just recently we watched the daily strip as MIT made some of the first appearances, even if it was only on the phone. Today, after a week at MIT only in the dorm room, we actually get to go outside. The tour of the Cambridge campus features the Stata Center – or as...

Today is primary day in our sister state of Connecticut, and the Democratic nation turns its lonely eyes to Joe Lieberman, the incumbent Senator. Lieberman, as you've likely heard or read, since the national media are in an absolute frenzy over this race, is trailing but getting closer in the polls to the smarmily named super-rich anti-war challenger, Ned Lamont, because voters are fed up with Lieberman's being such a, you know, Republican. Lieberman has...

Bostonist spends the morning hours in a car commuting like many of you out there. Finding podcasts that makes the commuting experience enjoyable can be a tall order. Well, we think we found one such podcast. The Morning Stories podcast has made sitting in traffic on Route 9 a much more pleasant experience. The Morning Stories podcast is produced by Tony Kahn for Boston's own WGBH. The idea behind this 'cast is to bring you...

Hey, remember way back when, last week, when we told you how you could get an "I Hate MassPirg" t-shirt? Well, the creator of NoMassPirg.com, Andy Lin (not pictured at right), had the good graces to respond to our e-mail questions. Now, without further commentary and in the interest of giving you the full story while simultaneously doing very little work, we offer you our questions and his answers: Bostonist: Who are you? Where are...

In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. Friday 7/14 They Came Back (Les Revenants) The dead return by the thousands, but they're the French dead: their hunger is existential. (American and Italian zombies, with traditional brain-eating values, will return next weekend.) Museum of Fine Arts, Remis Auditorium 6 pm, $10 They Came...

Attention local film patrons, geeks, students, snobs, enthusiasts: Cambridge's endangered Brattle Theatre is looking for volunteers to write for their Film Notes series. They'd like to see 800-1,000 word essays that "avoid the plot summaries and superficial value judgments of newspaper criticism," to be distributed at screenings and posted on their web site: "Anything from a personal recollection of the first time you saw Vertigo to an abridged academic paper on its critique of the...

We know Ben Affleck is back in town shooting a movie in Southie, but it's hard to think of him as one of our own anymore. He and Jennifer are trying their best to burn down Cambridge rather than make good in South Boston or even with his mom (we've heard she lives in Back Bay these days). We're much more interested in Townies: Live by the Gun and Die by the Gun. The message...

We tired of celebrity sightings that involve Matt Damon and Ben Affleck – their celebrity news has been decidedly boring as of late. So we’ve turned our attention to another Boston native, the wonderfully colorful character known as “King of R&B Bobby Brown” (thank Tyra Banks for bringing his monarchy to our attention). Last summer we were a bit skeptical as Being Bobby Brown was set to come on the air, but it’s been a...

We’ll play into the game, too – we like Weezer. Rivers Cuomo, frontman for Weezer, is finishing up his last few courses at Harvard College. He’s 35 and going for the undergraduate degree he hasn’t finished yet. It’s been more than 10 years in the making - dotted with tours, album releases, and commitments other than academics. And apparently he’s got no fridge in his room and keeps on wearing the same shirt. Back in...

Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got. Taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot. Wouldn’t you like to get away? Well take a break with today’s video. It’s not relevant to local or world events and there’s no social commentary. It is basically just a mash up featuring some of our most favorite viral characters from the interweb, TV, and the movies. Last night we were...
