For some reason, Florida rejected $2.4 billion in federal aid designed to develop high-speed rails. Massachusetts is one of many states willing to take what Florida refused. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is accepting applications for the cash until April 4. more ›

Sometimes a restaurant's decor can be misleading. We've all been to places that seem fancy but serve up mediocre food. In the case of Pizzeria Dante in Coolidge Corner, the exact opposite is true - it may look like any other brightly lit pizzeria, but the food choices prove that there's more going on in the kitchen. more ›

This weekend saw two serious bicycle crashes, one of which ended in death. 22-year-old Tracy Milillo died Friday after suffering serious head trauma during an accident with a car near Coolidge Corner. Brookline police have not determined if the driver was at fault in the accident. Milillo had not been wearing a helmet. A second accident on Saturday found a BU student pinned under his bicycle after crossing in front of an oncoming B-Line trolley. Despite tramautizing b0st0n.livejournal, the cyclist sustained minor injuries. more ›

Flag Day Parade in Brookline

             + 0 more

Since Flag Day was last Sunday, it makes sense that Brookline would have a parade for it today. If by "making sense" we mean Brookline has "stopped" making sense. If it ever did. Anyway, the parade accosted us as we went about our non–Flag Day, and we paused to snap a few photos of the fun, which involved flags, bikes, and bands. more ›

So, you bought that Mother's Day gift yet? The big day's tomorrow, you know. And of course you haven't bought anything yet, you ungrateful child. Fortunately, Brookline is defying its shut-storefronts trend with a new solution to your mom-present worries: Melt, a new store selling good-smelling handmade bath products of the type that (some) moms (and some dads!) love. Located right next door to the Kabloom flower shop—how convenient for those seeking a gift—in Coolidge Corner, the soothingly arranged Melt also provides a more pleasant shopping alternative to the stark and oddly lit Body Shop down the street. more ›

If Mormon (and Twilight series author) Stephenie Meyer drank alcohol, one would assume that Oliver Irving, writer and director of indie film How to Be would be first in line to buy Meyer a beer. Since anything at all connected to Twilight these days is instant box office or merchandising gold, what was once simply Irving's feature film debut is now the must-see indie for fans of Robert Pattinson, the British actor who starred in How to Be before he headed off to become sparkly vampire Edward Cullen. more ›

Everyone knows that Finale, with four locations in the metro Boston area, is a great place for fancy desserts (albeit slightly pricy). But did you know they also serve up tasty lunches at a reasonable price? more ›

Bostonist would like to state for the record that John Hodgman is neither portly, nor pudgy, nor rotund. He is, in fact, quite svelte and dashing. Mr. Hodgman mentioned last night during his reading at the Coolidge Corner Theatre that bloggers have been uniformly unkind in their assessment of his physique. We would like to challenge this misinformation, so Bostonist will refer to him from now on as "the svelte and dashing Hodgman." more ›

Last night, famous minor television personality (the fact that this label is catching on amongst reviewers is a touch ... strange) John Hodgman regaled a crowd at the Coolidge with lethal wit and tender humanitarian gestures.* The occasion was to celebrate the release of Hodgman's latest book, More Information Than You Require**. It is, in a sense, a continuation of The Areas of My Expertise, with the first page of the new book picking up right where the old one left off, on page 237. It is also a further compendium of knowledge: Mr. Hodgman said it contains "the past, as there's always more of it, the future, as there's still some apparently left to discuss," and much more.*** more ›

You could eat at Bottega Fiorentina every day for weeks and never have the same thing twice. There are five specials a day (like Tuesday's lasagna with meat and bechamel or Friday's pumpkin tortellini in a butter sage sauce), plus a made-to-order option with your choice of pasta and sauce. The penne with Fedora sauce (tomato, red pepper, garlic, rosemary, and cream), pictured above, is both sweet and spicy, and the pasta is cooked to a perfect al dente. The majority of the pasta dishes are under $10 and are available for dine-in or take-out. more ›

It's funny that Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz's new film is called What Happens in Vegas. It implies the usual counterpart to that line, "...stays in Vegas," but sadly the film doesn't take its own advice. This movie should have stayed in the film reel, or in the writer's head, or in Ashton Kutcher's pants, or any other place it didn't have the opportunity to enter the collective American consciousness. If there's anything we don't need, it's another film about a Britney-esque marriage and the stupid decisions that come before and after it. This thing has gotta be dumber than K-Fed after a few cold ones, not to mention derivative of more crappy "love" story films than we can count. more ›

--Hendry Street isn't the only place suffering from the home-foreclosure crisis. In fact, so many areas are suffering that real estate agents are taking possible buyers on bus tours of other people's property. As if someone losing a home doesn't have enough misery, now they have to have complete strangers tramping about on the front yard. [Boston Globe] more ›

The Brookline location is small, with only a handful of tables, so service is quick. Hot and fresh tortilla chips and a bright salsa verde are brought out for free as you peruse the menu. There are tons of choices, so it might take you a while to make a decision. more ›

-- Happy Valentine's Day! For us being vegan is all about the love. We love our bodies and want to keep them healthy and strong and free of animal products. We love the environment and want to protect it from the extremely destructive practices of factory farming. We love animals and don't want to see them mistreated. You'll most certainly be doing your heart a favor. Heart disease is still one of the biggest killers in the United States, and is due in large part to the S.A.D.'s (standard American diet) focus on meat products. So as you can see, you can add a little love to your life but cutting down on your consumption of meat and dairy products. more ›
