This weekend, as we know, Boston was host to the first annual PAX East gaming convention, the much-anticipated East Coast followup to the original PAX. The sold-out show brought thousands of game enthusiasts right into the heart of Boston to take over the Hynes Convention Center. The ceremonies kicked off with the roar of the crowd on Friday afternoon, when Wil Wheaton (of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Big Bang Theory fame) delivered an inspiring keynote speech, over which he'd labored extensively. The talk set the tone for a feeling of camaraderie (which sometimes seems in short supply in Boston, outside the drunken revelry of Sox games) that endured for the weekend. Mr. Wheaton's inspiring performance was followed by a few words from PAX creators Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, also known as Tycho and Gabe, from the web comic Penny Arcade. Bostonist arrived at the Prudential on Saturday ready to be let down. The gatekeepers at Anime Boston 2008 had not issued us a press pass, and our +20 Cloak of Belonging is, shall we say, somewhat out of date. But, to our great pleasure, the grim, unreachable confines of Hynes Convention Center could not contain Anime Boston's faithful, who erupted into the Shops at Prudential Center.
