  • Jenni Brennan's emotion changed from disbelief to anger once she realized a picture of her seven-month old son Jacob really was being used in an apparent international adoption scam using, you guessed it, Craigslist. The picture of her son came with the claim that he was Canadian born and living at an orphanage in Cameroon and that $300 would begin the adoption process. She called the FBI and the Massachusetts Attorney General's office. Yahoo! closed the e-mail account used in the posting. The picture was taken from the family's blog. Access to photos has since been restricted. "I never thought something like this would happen," said the mother. Unfortunately, people need to assume it will happen.

Any alleged negative attention garnered by Craigslist as a result of the "Craigslist Killer" case seems to have had little impact on how people use the Internet classified ad site, or on how well its business is doing. As a motion to investigate media leaks in the case filed by the attorney for alleged killer Philip Markoff tried was being rejected by Judge Frank M. Gaziano, another arrest involving illicit Craigslist ads was made on July 8. Two alleged prostitutes and a client were arrested in a sting run by Somerville police after officers responded to two separate craigslist ads for prostitution. Bostonist was under the impression Craigslist was cracking down on ads for "erotic services". One thing is certain, business appears unimpeded at Craigslist as the AP reported in June that the San Francisco-based company's revenue is expected to rise 23% and reach the $100 million mark.

In a "well, duh" matter, a Craigslist posting about "420 help" may have led to a Quincy man's arrest for selling marijuana. Remember, folks, just because they might not prosecute you for holding doesn't mean they won't prosecute you for selling. And take note that the police have definitely heard of Craigslist by now.

Philip Markoff, the Craigslist Killer, pled not guilty to seven charges on Monday pertaining to the death of 26-year-old Julissa Brisman. There is no bail and the trial begins on June 1, 2010. Prosecutors gave a detailed description of the crimes in asking for no bail. Markoff was indicted on Sunday.

Philip Markoff, a Boston University medical student, was indicted today on suspicion of killing Julissa Brisman, whom he met through craigslist. Markoff will be arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court tomorrow. Craigslist has changed its policy on "erotic services" ads based on this and similar cases.

Boston Blotter: Craigslist Masseuse Killed at Copley Marriott

-- Boston police report that a 26-year-old woman was shot to death at a hotel room in the Copley Marriott last night. The victim was reportedly a masseuse who was advertising in the erotic services section of Craigslist. Police believe that robbery was the motive behind the killing and have released a photograph of "a person of interest." The incident may be related to an earlier prostitute robbery that took place at the Westin Copley hotel. [BPDNews, Herald]

Ghoulish Craigslist Ad: No Fee, Chalk Outline Included

Today, an ad appeared on Craigslist for a two bedroom Mission Hill apartment priced at the bargain basement rent of $1,300, available for no fee. Too good to be true, right? It turns out that along with a parking space and "2 HUGE storage closets," the apartment comes complete with the chalk outline of a human body. Speculation on this Reddit thread has the apartment being the one involved in the May murder of a Northeastern student in the Parker Hill Apartments. But the building described in the Craigslist ad is a three unit condo, not a massive apartment complex. Was the unit a crime scene? Or just the hang-out for a couple of morbid MassArt students?

Craigslist and other online classifieds have made it easy for suburban brothels to attract Johns.

--The State Supreme Judicial Court just overturned the conviction of a Methuen ex-police officer accused of raping a woman in 2000. The case hinged on whether or not lawyers could prove the woman was "too intoxicated to consent, not that she was merely high and drunk." However, the SJC felt that the trial judge didn't give proper instructions to the jurors. The ex-officer will get a new trial. [Boston Globe]
