To the left is a picture of what was facing Chicago at about 4:00 Eastern (3 Central) yesterday, and as you might expect, the wave of massive thunderstorms and punishing wind meant that the Sox/Sox game at Comiskey* would be definitely cancelled delayed for three hours, then cancelled. So they'll try to play two today, but conditions in the Windy City are scheduled to still be a little windy. Josh Beckett will now face Jon... more ›

This should be fun. The best team in the American League against the best team in the National League. Two of the greatest pitching matchups we'll see all season. A glimpse of old friend David Wells. It's not that crazy to say the Red Sox and Padres will be eyeing each other with visions of an October rematch dancing in their heads. Daisuke Matsuzaka goes tonight in the first game. So this will be his... more ›

ESPN has never met a story it couldn't drive into the ground. Remember Terrell Owens' "suicide attempt" last fall? Unfortunately, with the Red Sox off, we need something sporty to talk about, so enter the Worldwide Leader's hyping of Barry Bonds' chase of the home run record. Jayson Stark, probably the best non-Gammons baseball writer out there, is flummoxed that not as many people are against Bonds as everyone seems to think. more ›

Why must NESN be so cruel? NESN [New England Sports Network] released a memo curtailing the use of Red Sox and Bruins highlights on local TV stations. Scott's Shots surveys the broader impact of this memo: "This is, in every way, shape and form, a HUGE powerplay that the Red Sox and NESN (and the Bruins, as if anyone cares) are about to undertake in an effort to lord over their content and ultimately become... more ›

Some thoughts while preparing for a sunny Memorial Day Weekend cookout… David Wells had some bad luck earlier this week, taking a baseball off his right knee. The 43 year-old lefty was pitching quite well until he took a Travis Lee line drive off his knee which knocked him out of the contest. Wells was pitching quite well, leaving after giving up 1 run on 5 hits (and no walks) over 4 1/3 innings. Although... more ›

Some tidbits, insights, slanted biased Bostonist type opinions, and other sports "knowledge" from the Bostonist's satellite office in Medford, on a lovely sunny Wednesday afternoon. more ›

David Wells, Mr. I-can't-go-out-to-eat-without-being-papparazzi'd-to-death, no longer wants to be traded. Hmmm...now that there's a question of his paycheck (and his $200K bonus per start), he's a dedicated Red Sox pitcher. Can you say flim flam? Flip-flop? Hey David, if you want privacy at a restaurant, give them a call in advance, tell them who you are, and get a private table. When you're famous and the city of Boston pays your salary, part of the deal is putting up with fans (note - fans, not people that want to beat you up or steal your Rolex) who might want to interact with you. Get over it; you've been in the bigs for 19 years. more ›

In most cases a lost series in New York would generate a blast-furnace of heat and outrage from Red Sox Nation. Watercoolers and the radio airwaves *should* be buzzing, but after looking back on the just-concluded series at the Stadium, this Bostonist came away with more of a smile than a scowl. The series, and road-trip, kicked off with a rather masterful performance by the Yankees' Aaron "Playing Anything But" Small, out-pitching the Sox's David Wells &mdash, an 8-4 win for the bad guys. The Sox gloves either had giant holes in them or their defense was actually that bad, coughing up 4 errors. Regardless, what're you gonna do? Realists would have agreed, "there's no way the Red Sox are leaving NY with a sweep". The numbers back it up — this season's squad has faltered on the first games of road series more often than not. Friday night's game? Bostonist gives them a mulligan. more ›

No doubt glad to be back home, at least for a little while, the Red Sox licked their collective wounds and returned to Boston last night after a pretty abysmal performance by Grimace, errr ... David Wells, after his stint on the DL. Two innings, 7 runs? Sure, not a problem! Today armchair managers across New England put on their 20/20 "hindsight goggles" and wondered whether or not Boomer should have taken the mound in Pawtucket for one game to work out the kinks and make sure he's game-ready. Bostonist trusts Tito, and probably would have agreed with the decision to let the veteran decide how he felt. Sure it didn't work out, but ... hey! If a pitcher can't ask for a measly 14 runs in run-support then whatayagon' do?! more ›

With a mere 10 days till the Sox open up the 2005 season in New York, it looks like things are starting to come together, at least roster-wise, for the team. By now we all know that Curt won't be pitching on opening day, and instead the ball will be handed over to David Wells. Sure, he might have been completely rocked by the O's in his latest spring training game (11 hits, 6 runs, in a 6-1 loss), but we can only hope that he's just working out the kinks. Please, Boomer? more ›
