All Department of Conservation and Recreation "deepwater pools" are closed as police investigate the death of Marie Joseph, 36, of Fall River, who apparently drowned in a DCR pool at Vietnam Veterans Memorial Pool at Lafayette Park in Fall River on Sunday. Now's your chance, as the Mass Department of Conservation and Recreation is holding a planning workshop to let people voice their opinions about Fells trails. Plans for the 2500-acre reservation spanning Malden, Medford, Melrose, Stoneham and Winchester will be developed in the short-term and long-term, beginning with an inventory and culminating in a draft trail plan by April 2010. more ›

After a year of work to fix a "support beam in need of immediate repair," the Department of Conservation and Recreation reopens the upstream sidewalk on the Longfellow Bridge today, fully reopening the bridge to pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the first time in forever. The best news? The Longfellow will be open for the Charles River fireworks show this July 4th. The Commonwealth has spent more than $12.5 million since August, 2007 to fix the bridge.
