The Globe says that a broken water main has shut down Congress Street (northbound) between State Street and North Street this morning. WBZTV has video. Water service in the area has not been interrupted, and there is not yet damage to surrounding buildings. The cause of the break is unknown. Workers hope to have it repaired by this evening. Be careful if you're driving in the area... or just try not to drive in the area.

A steam pipe burst downtown today. LiveJournal poster bluerose_x reported "amazing amounts of smoke shooting up from the manhole." A Bostonist tipper noted "a questionable brown substance all over a pick-up truck and at least one guy." That substance likely contains asbestos. WHDH also has video and reports that some people had to be decontaminated because the pipes had asbestos, and the area is covered with debris. Hence, hazmat will be involved. Myfoxboston had raw...

Woah! We were so busy being stranded in Boston Harbor that we totally forgot to mention that an MBTA bus smacked face-first into a wall as it exited the Pike yesterday afternoon! The bus was headed to Downtown Boston from Watertown. Seven people, including the bus driver, were brought to the hospital after suffering minor back and neck injuries. An undisclosed number of passengers stood around the bus for several minutes, shaking their heads...

Car and bus commutes through Downtown Boston were a nightmare this morning, thanks to a big hole. At approximately 7:00 a.m., a major water main broke, blasting a 10 foot by 20 foot crater in Blackstone Street. The break occurred near Haymarket Square, a.k.a. - "where all the new Big Dig streets and exits are, so no one knows where the hell they're going, anyway." Needless to say, traffic has been a mess all day....

Zooming in on the South End/Roxbury in Google Maps something interesting showed up: the gentrification line. The high resolution images are in their satellite database for all of Downtown and Back Bay. Most of the South End is included, but once you cross over Mass Ave, into what we generally accept as Roxbury, things aren't quite as clear, they aren't as green either. Back in January the Globe ran a piece called "Breaching Mass...

Rolling around Chelsea and East Boston this weekend, we came upon this view of the Tobin Bridge and Downtown Boston that made us feel like we were emerging from the jungle to discover a lost city (it's the trees hanging in from either side). This shot was taken from Mary O'Malley Park, which we urge everyone to check out, as it is an absolutely lovely place for whiling away summer afternoons. The park is off...

Nothing these days is quite so good at provoking strong emotions about gentrification as that ugly, forced sobriquet that realtors have tried to foist on East Boston: "EaBo." To begin with, Bostonist can't decide if it sounds more like a person with a head cold talking about a certain sub-genre of music, or the name of a character from the movie Friday. But beyond that, "EaBo" embodies, for some, everything bad about high-rent outsiders coming in to ruin classic, old-timey Boston neighborhoods. On the other hand, for developers and their ilk, "EaBo" gives name to hopes of cashing in on the next big thing. This is also true, we learn from today's Globe, of restaurateurs.
