Today in MBTA Horror Stories

So, the T saw two fires last night, just as rush hour was winding down. Bad wiring at South Station closed the Red Line, and, minutes later, a commuter threw trash on the third rail at Chinatown, starting a fire that closed the Orange Line and filled both Chinatown and Downtown Crossing stations with smoke. (Don't do that again, commuter!) Sections of both lines were closed for hours as the T put out the fires and repaired the damage. Shuttle buses were hard to find or, in some cases, completely non-existent. It was a frustrating night.

According to the Boston Globe, the Chinatown, Downtown Crossing, and South Station MBTA stations have been evacuated due to an electrical fire. Red and Orange Line service has been stopped in the area. No injuries have been reported. Substitute shuttle bus service is being provided.

WBZ reports a water main break in Downtown Crossing flooded the area early this morning. Some water service in the area was interrupted, but has been restored. Crews are still working to repair the damage. Update: check the insane photos.

Yesterday's construction accident in Downtown Crossing, in which a bucket lift (also being called a crane) toppled over near the Brattle Book Shop, has proved fatal. One of the construction workers injured in the accident has died; the other is in serious condition. The workers had been inspecting a Suffolk University building. Reliable Roofing, which employed the workers, had been fined for safety reasons previously. Globe commenters speculate that wood placed underneath the machine or lack of stabilizers may have caused it to fall.

A bucket lift fell over in Downtown Crossing today, crashing into a building and injuring two construction workers. One had been in the bucket and another was thrown against a building by the crash. The lift was at 10 West St. and fell across the street into a lot next to the Brattle Book Shop.

  • A fire truck crashed into a building in Mission Hill. One firefighter was killed, three firefighters were hurt, and some children that had been in the building suffered minor injuries as well. The truck's brakes may have failed. [Globe]

Cheap Mexican food is easy to find, but cheap sit-down Mexican is not so forthcoming. Luckily, Fajitas & 'Ritas in Downtown Crossing offers south-of-the-border eats with less cafeteria-style ambiance. Whether you're looking for appetizers and pitchers of margaritas or a full meal, there's plenty on the menu that will satisfy.

Well, now you know how to get around and where to drink. How about where to get some cheap grub? There's lots of great food in this city, it just takes some exploring to find it.

Green beans on a sandwich? That was this Bostonist's first thought on encountering a sandwich from Chacarero. But the combination of ingredients that make up a Chacarero sandwich - chicken and/or steak, jalapeno sauce, munster cheese, tomatoes, green beans, guacamole - form a unique balance amongst themselves. The hot sauce makes your lips tingle, while the guacamole cools them off. The soft tomatoes and the slight crunch of the beans pair well, and the cheese - well, doesn't any good sandwich need cheese? Choose from veggie, chicken, beef, or combo (chicken and beef, in perfect harmony), served on freshly-made bread. You'll forget there are green beans on there after one bite.

We heard from several Bostonists and saw reports about the transportation mess that ensued after the fire that broke out, causing an evacuation at Park Street and Downtown Crossing. Charlie clearly didn't have his stuff together. Here's what LyetteAnn had to say:

You're going to have a long trip home tonight. Trains are stuck at stations because of an electrical fire that caused evacuations at Downtown Crossing and Park Street around 5:20 tonight.

--Bye-bye, Filene. The legendary store saw some "major destruction" today. [More photos at On Common Ground]

Even though the day was so soggy that Wollaston Station flooded for a brief time, a fire broke out in the old Filene's Basement that is above the Downtown Crossing T stop. The fire broke out at 7:00 pm, 50 people were evacuated, and the Downtown Crossing T stop was shut down for 2 hours, between about 7:00 and 9:00.

--After such nice weather, a Nor'easter? You're kidding, right? Oh, no. You're not. At least it's scheduled to arrive Sunday, which will make the Pantsless T Ride much more pleasant. [WBZ]

Bus schedule improvements? Mattapan high-speed? New Blue Line trains? Oooh, Santa Charlie isn't finished with us yet!

Update: WBZ has pictures of an SUV crashing into the bus. Another car plowed into the back of the car that hit the bus. The people involved were lucky--only three people on the bus and four in the SUV were hit.

--When word got out that Mayor Menino wanted to bring in a petting zoo to revitalize Downtown Crossing, we thought it was a joke. But it turns out that the barnyard animals are at the crossing on weekends outside Filene's Basement. Animal activists are underwhelmed, and how can looking at sad, cold animals inspire people to shop? Okay, okay, the photo you see here is blurry, but Bostonist had to pay tribute to the Best T Outfit Ever, and you can't even see half of it. We marveled at this rider while riding the Red Line from Downtown Crossing yesterday. Her red-and-black ensemble was spectacular: black high-heel boots, very low-riding leather black pants, a studded black belt, a bright red shirt with a sequined red band, a studded leather vest, and a...

--Don't mess with the elderly in this city. They are not easy targets. A guy found that out when he tried to steal an old woman's purse at the Downtown Crossing T stop. On Wednesday night, Christopher Linehan, 29, of Dorchester, tried to snatch the purse of the unidentified 79-year-old woman. Neither party would let go of the purse, so Linehan tried dragging the woman to one of the black turnstiles. Good Samaritans started blocking...

Ann Patchett, Wednesday, September 26, 6:00 pm, Coolidge Corner (via Brookline Booksmith) The author of Bel Canto situates her latest book in Boston, and the plot should seem awfully familiar - the head of a political family tries to perpetuate a political dynasty. A Boston mayor steps down and tries to drive two of his adopted sons into politics. In the span of one day, events unfold that might change those plans. Vincent Lam, Wednesday,...

The Joiner is a newcomer to Boston and a compulsive joiner of clubs and organizations. He shares his experience joining Boston area groups weekly at Bostonist. The scene at Downtown Crossing's Alley Bar the afternoon of Saturday, September 1, should have been more somber, considering New England's only gay rugby squad had lost its first match of the season by a score too embarrassing to relate. But that's not how rugby works. After the match...

Filene's Basement has been announcing its closure for ages, but they've finally done it for real. Shoppers have scoured the racks for the last time, and the Downtown Crossing building is now a blank canvas for developers. And it feels like somebody died. Jessica Fargen at the Herald used the phrase "pay their respects" when describing customers on the last day. Andrew Ryan at the Globe called the final day of shopping "grim" and declared...
