Andy Woodruff of Cartogrammar, who previously mapped the skies for us, has noted the sentiment many Boston newcomers express upon visiting Harvard Square, or Davis Square, or Kenmore Square, or any other local "square": but it's not square! To confirm this brilliant observation, Woodruff has mapped area squares, demonstrating that a "square" can take more shapes than we'd ever thought possible. Which square's shape is most appealing to you? more ›

Bostonist Flickr pool member derequito posted a number of excellent shots of ceremonial groundbreaking at the Ferdinand Building, and also wrote about the issue on his blog. We're glad he brought this event to our attention, because it's a great reminder of the Dudley Square Vision Project, which will be discussed tomorrow from 4-6 in Roxbury. This meeting is (conveniently?) not listed on the City of Boston event calendar. more ›

--Police have released a sketch of the man they believe to be responsible for the two attacks on women on the Esplanade and one attack in South Boston. Again, here is a description: "A black man, 28 to 32 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, about 220 pounds with a muscular build and a shaved head. The man was wearing a sleeveless T-shirt and dark-colored jeans." We're also posting the police sketch. Police have... more ›

The Globe reported yesterday that wireless Internet access in Boston won't be coming form a city-funded agency but from a newly formed nonprofit organization. Papers were filed with the Commonwealth to establish "openairboston.net" a nonprofit group to bring wireless internet access to Boston. They've got a bare bones website up and running already describing the intent of the operation. The nonprofit model was selected after the Wireless Task Force submitted their report on providing wireless access city-wide in Boston. After Menino announced his plan to bring wifi city wide in early 2006 he convened the task force to create a plan to realize the goal. Months and months of debate resulted in a final report with some ideas on how to proceed. more ›

LAist has so much fun this week! They go to E3, where they overhear the timeless remark "Man, this is where nerdy girls get laid." Is that a promise? They also give us this week's best CDs and make us realize that LA is the best place to use Zillow. more ›

Trolling around looking for wonderful tidbits of life in the Hub have yet to bring us into Roxbury. Today's video, the self proclaimed "Ruff Cut" of the song All Time High, brings us there – with a glimpse of life and a song. Unfortunately, the sound quality that comes off a YouTube video leaves much to be desired. So, Bostonist can't claim that this song is new ring-tone worthy, but hey, it's still the rough cut. more ›

Bostonist is scrambling to make sure that all our servers and home computers are ready for y2k. The date will roll over in a matter of months and our computer will start thinking we live in 1900. The Big Dig will be complete: tunnels and bridges open, and a beautiful greenway will roll past the North End and Haymarket, the Green Line will extend into Somerville and Silver Line service will run smoothly connecting Dudley Square to the Airport. Oh, wait. It’s 2006. We forgot. FutureBoston has this snazzy video posted on their website to let us know what to expect after 2000. Most of the Big Dig projects have been completed and Armageddon didn’t hit when computers rolled past midnight on 1999. We’re not living in fantasy-land so it isn’t surprising that there is still some work to be done and contentious issues to solve. Take a look at what the “block” will show you. more ›
