Remember when the Celtics used to blow double-digit leads as a matter of course? If you do remember - and we can't blame you, with the words "epic collapse" thrown around town so freely in the last 72 hours - you were probably as nervous as we were in the fourth quarter yesterday afternoon, when a rusty, inept Orlando team suddenly turned a 20 point lead into a nailbiter. But the Celtics held on, and won 92-88 for a 1-0 series lead.

Celts legend Larry Bird ate Lebron James' Big Mac in a McDonald's commercial, so PETA responded in the only sensible way: by saying that McDonald's kills chickens, and that Larry Bird should empathize with the birds (get it?). PETA even wrote a letter asking Bird to stop endorsing McDonald's:
Is it just us, or does it seem like whenever the Bruins have the spotlight to themselves, they lose? When they play the same night as the Celtics, or Patriots, they're fine, but give everyone else the night off, and it feels like we always have to lead with a Bruins loss. Maybe it's just us. But they deserve better.
In a sense, it's comforting. The Celtics went to battle against one of the other good Eastern teams without Kevin Garnett, and almost beat 'em. On the day of the C's' long-awaited return to national afternoon TV, the script ran eerily similar to the first game in Orlando; the Magic jumped out to a big lead, the Celtics clawed their way back, but ran out of gas at the end. Orlando's the only team to get a 14-point lead on the Green all year, and they've done it twice.
Let's say you're going to the Celtics-Timberwolves game tonight. If you're like most of the people at Celtics games these days, chances are you weren't there last year. Which is perfectly legal on your part. But there's something you should know. Most of the Timberwolves played here last year, during that long, miserable 06-07 campaign, and several of them - promising, hardworking youngsters for the most part - were sent away to make room for the Celtics team you proudly cheer today.
Gifts were exchanged in Foxboro yesterday. From Miami to New England: a total lack of competition. From New England to Miami: Their foots off the gas pedal and a non-humiliation. 'Tis the season in the NFL.
A mixed bag on Big TV day in New England. Let's start with the good: The Bills had won four in a row, and were feeling pretty good about being able to hang around with the Patriots. They even got an inspirational message on the Jumbotron from injured Kevin Everett, so they had to be pumped up. Eleven seconds later, they were down 28-0 (numbers may not be strictly accurate). We're running out of ways...
Not much going on locally around here, but that doesn't mean Boston's players weren't busy, especially in Florida. Daisuke Matsuzaka is already living up to his potential as a pitcher and as a big-money draw.
Let's just set aside the Celtics current troubles and cheer for Gerald Green, who won the NBA All-Star Slam Dunk contest with skill and some serious showmanship. Green needed to be flashy because the All-Star events were already set in the shiny, sparkly city of Las Vegas, and he lived up to the landscape. With Paul Pierce as his set-up man, Green competed against Orlando's Dwight Howard, Chicago's Tyrus Thomas, and last year's winner, Nate...
