A pilot died when his single-engine fixed wing Piper 28 crashed before 9 a.m. at the Spencer Airport. The FAA is investigating. The plane is registered to a West Brookfield man, and appears to not be in one piece, accoring to TV reports. The pilot was not named yet. The runway is made of gravel and is 1,930-feet long. The airport is about five miles west of Worcester. [WCVB]
For the second time this year, two small planes crashed on the same day in Massachusetts. Today, tragically, one man died in one of the two plane crashes today in Central Massachusetts. A man died after his replica AT 6 Navy training jet crashed into the Nashua River as he tried to land at the Fitchburg Municipal airport near Leominster. The pilot reported engine trouble after taking off from Hanscom Field in Bedford around 1 p.m. This morning, an ultralight plane crashed in Stow. Two people on the plane went to the hospital with "serious but not life-threatening" injuries according to the Stow Fire Department. The aircraft took off from the Crow Island private airport that hosts Air America, an ultralight aircraft group. On August 3, two planes crashed off Cape Cod and everyone survived. The FAA is investigating both crashes.
